Bunker Holding welcomes EU’s 2040 climate target On February 6, the European Commission presented its proposal for a 90 percent emissions reduction target by 2040 as can be read here: https://lnkd.in/ecsTZJ3K Bunker Holding, being a crucial part of the maritime value chain, supplying roughly 10 percent of the global shipping fleet’s fuel, has a clear part to play in supporting the shipping industry in meeting the IMO's and EU's 2030, 2040, and 2050 reduction targets. As such, we welcome this communication and commitment from the EU, as it provides long-term investment security for us to engage in partnerships, last-mile delivery arrangements, facilities, and promise of prioritised supplies of alternative fuels to the shipping industry. Especially the fact that the Commission proposes that alternative fuels, including advanced biofuels and e-fuels, should be prioritised for the shipping sector. “Shipping is a hard-to-abate sector and the significant price gap between fossil and alternative fuels constitutes a barrier for uptake of the green fuels. While IMO remains the preferred regulator of global shipping, we welcome that the EU takes a firm stance by proposing a pathway to emission reduction, and we expect that the EU will be leading by example in the crucial negotiations ahead of us at IMO. Bunker Holding is fully committed to delivering on our promise of being the industry’s preferred partner in supplying the low- and zero-emission fuels of the future,” says Keld Rosenbæk Demant, CEO of Bunker Holding. We at Bunker Holding look forward to the tabling of concrete EU legislative proposals in the coming years and are determined to contribute to ensuring that shipping can deliver its part to decarbonisation. #BHG #Shipping #EUComission

REGULATION: International Chamber of Shipping presents revised proposal for #emissions fee and green fuel pricing incentivization Working with the governments of #Bahamas and #Liberia, the International Chamber of Shipping (#S) has presented a comprehensive new proposal to ensure delivery of the UN International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) ambitious target to achieve #netzero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from international shipping by or around 2050. Guy Platten, ICS secretary general, commented, “It is time for governments ‘bite the bullet’. Unless a distinct GHG pricing mechanism and feebate program are included in the IMO regulations adopted next year, we genuinely fear that shipping’s transition to net zero by or around 2050 will be unlikely to succeed.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/erWShY9D #Marine #Maritime #Electrification #Decarbonization #Sustainability #Environment #Technology #Transportation #EHMExpo #EHMXNA #ukimediaevents

A very well timed post by DNV. Every alternative fuel has their pros and cons, and shipping does not have a silver bullet to decarbonize. The cons have to be actively mitigated. So while you may have preference for one, do not mudsling the other. And certainly do not spread misinformation like how some organizations do it. Doing so will only impede the industry's progress to reach net zero. As Saunak Rai once said at last month's GREEN4SEA seminar, "Decarbonization of shipping will be achieved with a mosaic of solutions." Every player has their choice of alternative fuel, depending on mission, vessel types and ports they serve. How can we encourage diversity in choices while combatting misinformation in the name of going green? The shipping industry must stop trying to promote one alternative fuel by devaluing another, DNV Maritime CEO Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen has told Riviera Maritime Media Ltd. “When you believe in a certain alternative fuel, there is no reason to talk down the other alternatives; we will need fuels for different trades, different ship types, and different size vessels,” Knut said. “One fuel will fit, and one will not fit, and the granularity around these issues is quite important.” With shipowners having to comply with a raft of new and updated regulations including those from the International Maritime Organization, FuelMaritime EU and the European Union Emissions Trading System, increasing investments are being made to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The EU's FuelEU Maritime regulation is shaking up the shipping industry with its ambitious emissions targets and focus on 'well-to-wake' assessments. But with navigating the regulatory maze proving a daunting task, companies are left wondering if they can keep up with the shift to sustainable fuels fast enough. While tools like zero44's calculator offer a lifeline, the playing field is tilting and market disadvantage looms large. This regulatory bombshell comes at a time when the global energy landscape is in chaos. Even with 'Net Zero' ambitions, economic backlash, infrastructure limitations, and critical mineral bottlenecks threaten progress. Oil and gas still cling to life, while 'clean' solutions come with their own set of challenges. Wisdom guides us to pursue ambitious goals while respecting the pace of technological advancement. Perhaps a balanced approach, where innovation and practicality walk hand-in-hand, will lead to the most sustainable progress. https://lnkd.in/d2rGsHzJ #shippingindustry #climatepolicy #sustainablefuels #netzero OCIMF (Oil Companies International Marine Forum)

When it met in London last week, the UN's International Maritime Organization endorsed an updated work plan for the development of international guidelines for new alternative fuels, including the development of guidelines for hydrogen and ammonia as fuels. This is a welcome development. As Stuart Neil at the International Chamber of Shipping writes in this article, governments and the shipping sector must prioritise developing an integrated plan for how hydrogen-based fuels will be produced and transported, as well as used. #hydrogen #hydrogeneconomy #greeneconomy #maritime2050 #zeroemissions #shipping #cleanfuels https://lnkd.in/exZ79pwQ

According to our latest Maritime Forecast to 2050, including a pooling mechanism in a compliance strategy can reduce the cost of decarbonization by 6%, if measured in total cost per tonne of GHG emission reductions. Our latest #maritimeimpact article explores the results of a pooling case study, investigating whether the pooling mechanism in the upcoming FuelEU Maritime regulation could trigger a sustainable business case for methanol-capable vessels utilizing full green-methanol capacity over a 10-year period. Within a pooling arrangement, early adopters of green fuels and technologies can benefit from selling excess emission units to non-compliant vessels. The article also examines the findings of various scenarios for future fuel mixes, including e-methanol, bio-LNG, and hydrogen. Read the full article to explore all insights in detail and understand how the maritime industry can navigate the path to a sustainable future. https://dnv.social/5NC #decarbonization #pooling #shipping #maritimeforecast

Global Maritime Forum, UCL Energy Institute, and UN Climate Change High-Level Champions have issued a new report offering a "serious wakeup call" that production of scalable zero-emissions fuel (SZEF) currently in the pipeline could, under the more conservative scenario, end up covering less than half of the fuel needed to hit the International Maritime Organization 2030 target, while the current order book of SZEF-capable vessels would only deliver around 25% of required SZEF demand by the same year. The Methanol Institute contributed to the report, sharing our global database of the current pipeline of renewable methanol projects - bio-methanol and e-methanol. The key to sustainable shipping will be the collaboration of fuel suppliers, vessel owners, ports, and policy-makers all pulling our oars together.
