Hi Washingtonians! It's that time of year where we must start thinking about what's on the November ballot. There are a number of ballot initiatives this year I encourage you to learn about: I-2117 (climate commitment act repeal), I-2109 (capital gains tax repeal), and I-2124 (weakening long-term care). If these pass, we lose. I-2117 would repeal one of our strongest climate laws. The Climate Commitment Act is a "cap-and-invest" system that limits greenhouse gas emissions from major polluters and invests its revenues in wildfire prevention, transit services, Tribal nations, clean energy, environmental justice, and more. Repealing it means we lose a substantial amount of funding for these services and communities, and polluting industries will be held much less accountable for climate change. I-2109 is a tax cut for the wealthiest 0.2% of Washingtonians. Repealing it means we lose funding for childcare and education. I-2124 would eliminate Washington’s long-term care insurance program. Repealing it means sending more people into debt when they're faced with expensive long-term care bills and private insurance premiums they can't afford. Please vote "No" on these initiatives!
We can’t afford I-2117 this November. If it passes, it would allow more pollution and cut critical investments in programs that lower costs for Washingtonians and support clean air & water, wildfire prevention, transit service, road projects, Tribal nations, and salmon habitat. See what’s at stake in your county with this interactive tool, and vote #NoOn2117 https://lnkd.in/g5ATwiGi

When you remove fire from fire-mediated ecosystems you create conditions that not only have negative ecological consequences, but also have the potential to support incredibly dangerous wildfire conditions. We have known for decades now that fire suppression and the shift towards homogenous forested landscapes have increased the risk of large-scale wildfires, but a combination of lack of will to address the issue, lack of capacity and funds, and the ever present disregard of expert opinion continue to write the narrative.

According to the US National Interagency Fire Center, almost 7.5 million acres of land have been burned year to date through 10/4/2024. That's compared to only 2.5 million acres over the same time period in 2023, and almost 7 million acres through 10/4/2022. There are currently 28 active large wildfires across 8 states that have burned over 1 million acres so far. Idaho has the most with 12 active fires, Oregon is second with 9, and California is third with 3 fires. #sustainability #sustainabilityreporting

Wildfires can pose a serious threat to our homes, especially those located near forests. Luckily, there are many ways to help keep wildfires at bay. Some strategies include creating defensible space, clearing excess brush, and limiting motor use (such as lawnmowers) during the day. As a seasoned firefighter, I can attest to the critical importance of vigilance as we approach the beginning of the #wildfire season. Make no mistake the fire season is here early. The combination of dry weather and parched landscapes has set the stage for potentially devastating wildfire season across #Canada. Each year, we witness the ferocity with which these fires can spread, threatening homes, wildlife, and lives. Devastating communities and exposing the lack of preparedness. The early onset of fire season is a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of our environment and the ever-present danger that surrounds us. As our brave firefighters (Urban, Rural and Wildland), stand ready to confront these challenges head-on. We as fire service leaders and advocates must also be aggressive in our advocacy and messaging to the public to take proactive measures to mitigate the risk of ignition. From clearing defensible space around homes to adhering to fire restrictions and bans, every action counts in our collective efforts to safeguard communities and natural habitats. Let us not underestimate the power of #prevention and #preparedness in the face of this formidable adversary. Together, we can navigate this #fireseason with resilience and determination.
