OFRI supports the forest sector and the stewardship of natural resources through forest education.
About us
Nearly half of Oregon is covered in forests. These forests provide many social, environmental and economic benefits to the state and its residents, including clean air and water, recreational opportunities, jobs and the wood products that we use every day. It is important that all Oregonians have the opportunity to learn more about our forests and how they're a vital resource. In 1991, the Oregon Legislature created the Oregon Forest Resources Institute (OFRI) to support and enhance Oregon’s forest products industry. The state agency provides forest education programs for the general public, K-12 teachers and students, and forest landowners. Its mission is to support the forest sector and the stewardship of natural resources by advancing Oregonians' understanding of the social, environmental and economic benefits of our forests.

If you're finding more locked gates on private timberland that's normally open for recreational access, it's likely "in reaction to the ever-increasing incidents of offensive littering, abandonment of vehicles, theft of forest products, and acts of criminal mischief," according to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office.

OFRI Director of Communications Jordan Benner recently took a road trip over the Cascades to take photos for an educational publication we're producing for students about forest careers. The trip included stops at a forest burned in the 2017 Separation Fire, a lava field with determined trees growing out of it and Scott lake.
