Did you know that 88.2% of skiers are white, whilst only 1.2% are Black? Trippin community members, Off Piste Ski Trip are on a mission to change this and actively bring Black culture to the slopes. Last week I spoke at their pre-trip community event alongside the brilliant Andrew Alexander K. and co founder of Off Piste Karen Grillo✨ to discuss taking up space in the outdoors and the transformative power of travel and skiing. Skiing has often been perceived as an exclusive sport, creating a barrier for many communities of colour. The association with a white, middle-class identity still paints an unwelcoming and exclusionary picture. However, this lack of diversity in the outdoors doesn't equal a lack of interest. There have been a growing number of outdoor and ski communities, focused on providing space by people of the global majority. Movements like Opening Up The Outdoors challenge the homogenised whiteness of the industry, envisioning an outdoor community that is truly diverse, equitable, anti-racist and accessible to everyone. At Trippin, we are committed to making travel and exploration, especially in outdoor spaces, accessible. We’re removing barriers through educational resources that give guidance and support on how to navigate the world with more ease. Check out our Black Travel tools, including "A Guide to Skiing and Snowboarding for Black Travellers," curated by Off Piste. As taking up space in the outdoors grows, the lingering question from an audience member echoes in my mind: 'We're outside, but are we welcome?' It's time to change that narrative together. Attention ALL Mountain Guides!! This is a topic I feel very passionate about: My goal is to create equal opportunities for guides going through the track to become an IFMGA certified mountain guide on a splitboard versus solely on skis. That is correct, which a lot of guides did not realize, that we as splitboarders are not accepted fairly into this institution. As a splitboarder, I have to go through the same exact rigorous examination process as a skier, fulfill all the same requirements, and yet I have to prove myself on skis in an additional exam. Skiers are not required to reciprocate and show their abilities on a snowboard. Snowboarding wasn’t in place back in 1965 when the IFMGA was founded, thus regulations require splitboarders to demonstrate the same standard of skiing as a ski guide would through this additional exam. Imagine the years it may take in order to reach the standard. I could just call it here and become an American Mountain Guide which would mean I could only work in the US and a select few countries as a guide. I want to guide in Europe though, just the same as my colleagues are able to on their skis. Equals! The crazy thing is that even if I pass the ski movement I am not required to guide on my skis! I can guide on my splitboard. We as riders want to show the world that splitboarding has developed into a high performing means of transportation as well as carving down a slope as a guide. I need your support!! I need a critical mass of guides that want to change this industry from all countries!! I am in the process of writing a letter to the IFMGA board and now I need signatures from YOU.
