🌏🔗 Exciting Developments in the Critical Minerals Sector! 🌏🔗 Australia and the European Union have recently inked a groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding that paves the way for significant investments in critical minerals like nickel. This agreement is poised to enhance both regions' positions in the global market for sustainably sourced materials, vital for our clean energy future. Why is this important? The deal not only promotes high Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards but also aligns with the Australian government's efforts to secure strategic trade relations amid growing global demand for 'green' minerals. This is particularly crucial as industries worldwide shift towards more sustainable practices, reducing environmental footprints and increasing the use of renewable energy sources. This partnership could potentially revive free trade talks previously stalled by agricultural disputes, opening new doors for trade and investment opportunities. For businesses, this means better integration into European markets, particularly for products meeting high sustainability standards. The focus on ESG in mineral processing and trade underlines the critical need for transparency and high ethical standards in supply chains. It’s a call to action for businesses to elevate their practices and embrace sustainability not just as a compliance measure, but as a core business strategy. Could this be the catalyst for more sustainable business practices in your industry? Integrates Compliance and Sustainability at multinational enterprises | Sustainability Due Diligence & traceability | Business Compliance & Ethics | Non-Financial Risk and stakeholder management
Today kicks off the OECD - OCDE Forum on Responsible Mineral Supply Chains. If you can't make it to Paris 🗼, follow it online 🤓 💻 to gain insights on how your company can impact and #increase_leverage towards a #compliant and #sustainable path. After working so many years for #GoodGovernance in the #mining_sector I can't be more happy to see this agenda 📑 relevant as ever. ✅ #Critical_transition_minerals 🍃 ⛏ are a key driver for the #responsible green transition. ✅ Sustainability #DueDiligenceLaws ⚖ also require your company to understand #risks_impacts of your #valuechain ⛓ until #rawmaterials ⛏. This applies to almost all products and indirectly to services (through for example electronics), even if this sounds cliché. ✅ Due Diligence is the foundation of a good #Double_materiality_assessment #CSRD I highly recommend plenaries and partner sessions, specially where good friends and collaborators participate: 🎙 Erica Westenberg and Matthew Chamberlain on #partnerships to make critical transition minerals supply responsible and resilient. 🎙 Natascha Nunes da Cunha on responsible #investment to solve the puzzle for critical transition minerals. 🎙 Mora Johnson on implications for #duediligence and #fundamentalrights to ensure security and license to operate. 🎙 Hannah Koep-Andrieu due diligence's control point for #refining and #smelters- A must for full traceability and #EU_product_passports. 🎙 Emily Norton Evolving landscape of due diligence from fragmentation to complementarity. 🎤 Inga Petersen Kaisa Toroskainen Global Battery Alliance, Sebastian Sahla, Gay Alessandra Ordenes EITI (Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative), Julia Naime Rainforest Foundation Norway, Julia Poliscanova (she/her), Tim Schloesser #GIZ, Susannah McLaren Cobalt Institute, IRMA Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance - Caroline Avan Business & Human Rights Resource Centre Lauren Vopni #AngloAmerican, Mihai Popa IKEA, Jan Knacksterdt Mercedes-Benz AG. #CSDDD #NorwegianTransparencyAct #LkSG #EUBatteryReg #EUDR #EUCriticalRawMaterialsAct

Join the conversation 💬 on critical minerals and their role in the clean energy transition! 🌍 This session at our upcoming conference 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮-𝗝𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗻 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗮 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻-𝗡𝗲𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝟮𝟬𝟱𝟬 in Adelaide this week on Friday, 12 April will engage in discussions shedding light on the complexities of the clean energy transition. Critical minerals – the building blocks essential to shifting our economies to a lower-carbon future – are very much in the news as the world strives to find ways of ensuring stable and reliable supply at reasonable prices. With geopolitical issues increasingly impinging on the conversation, both Australia and Japan have a strong imperative to ensure they have diverse and resilient supply chains for these crucial components of the future energy mix. But the path to date has not been smooth. While the long term outlook for critical minerals seems assured, in the shorter term the waters have been choppy. Difficulties in matching supply with demand, and heavy concentration of processing in a single country have contributed to severe price volatility, standing in the way of effective and diverse global markets. As both economic and strategic partners with highly complementary economies, both Australia and Japan have a strong national interest in ensuring these issues are resolved. Australia needs to maximise the value from its huge natural resources; Japan needs to be able to secure all its requirements from a trusted partner. That’s why we’re holding a special breakout Round Table conversation, moderated by Namali Mackay, Managing Director of the Critical Minerals Association Australia, and featuring key players such as Rio Tinto, Export Finance Australia, Renascor Resources Limited and a range of major Japanese investors at our upcoming conference! Questions to be considered include: 🔹 How do market fluctuations impact critical mineral supply certainty, and how do Australian and Japanese governments and companies respond? 🔹 Have recent policy developments in both countries fostered cooperation on critical minerals? 🔹 how can government-business collaboration address the obstacles hindering establishing durable Australia-Japan Critical Minerals supply chains? …and more! 🔍 Stay updated with live program details: https://lnkd.in/g_rMUCW8 #CriticalMinerals #AustraliaJapanPartnership #AUSJPNEnergyPartners #AJBCC Richard Andrews Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade) Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade JETRO - Japan External Trade Organization Tim Lester Fiona Simon Clare Pope Llewelyn Hughes Mack Wilson Shannon O'Rourke Tom Allen Hugo Batten Katerina Aleksoska

I am delighted to share a new SOMO long read, with Alejandro Gonzalez: The EU's Critical Mineral Crusade. On how the EU is using its trade policy to secure and control access to critical mineral for its green transition, and the implications for mineral resource governance in the Global South. Particularly, it reveals how EU free trade agreements set out to facilitate trade and investment in energy and raw materials, thereby driving up resource extraction, while affecting governments' abilities to leverage their mineral wealth through downstream and value addition strategies.
