Today marks the first day of the lunar new year and the Year of the Snake. Coincidentally, today is also Mercedes-Benz’s 139th birthday. What better way to start the new year, right? To everyone who’s celebrating: may the Year of the Snake bring you happiness, prosperity and fortune.

Every day, on the road to a more sustainable future, we aim to close the battery loop. It starts on cell level at our new eCampus in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim, where we develop the batteries of the future based on Mercedes-Benz DNA – with circularity in mind from the start. It's also where we will continue to grow our process capabilities with production of battery cells on an industrial level. That all leads to series production of complete batteries at any one of the plants in our global battery production network on three continents – like this one in Bibb County, Alabama (USA). It provides batteries for the EQS SUV, EQE SUV and Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV assembled at our nearby plant in Tuscaloosa. Finally, at the end of a long vehicle life, we are ready to close the loop by recycling our batteries to recover precious materials such as lithium, nickel and cobalt. These can be used again to produce new batteries. Our off-road icon always remains true to itself with its timeless exterior design. A slightly raised bonnet and so-called “air curtains” in the rear wheelarch flares are among the other design elements that characterise the all-electric model. Together with the new A-pillar cladding and a spoiler lip on the roof, they contribute to optimised aerodynamics. Thanks to intelligent lighting functions, adaptive MULTIBEAM LED headlights illuminate the road according to the situation. They react to the current traffic situation with the help of 84 individually controlled, high-performance LEDs. Heat-insulating, dark-tinted glass is used on the rear side windows and the rear window. Silver EQ badges on the wings indicate that the vehicle is fully electric. Another unique selling point is the optional rectangular design box on the rear door. Items such as charging cables, tools or snow chains can be easily stowed inside. The intelligent vehicle functionalities of the future call for pioneering new algorithms and hardware. That’s why Mercedes-Benz is researching artificial neural networks that could radically increase the speed and energy efficiency of complex AI computations. This could revolutionise future driving assistance and safety systems by overcoming the limits of today’s computing hardware. For instance, conventional computing requires up to 3000 watts for advanced automated driving functions. In future, neuromorphic computing could do this with just 300 watts, by mimicking the human brain with so-called “event-based processing“.
