Empowering Educators of Color to Learn Languages & Travel Abroad🌎

“You can’t be what you can’t see.” – Secretary Roberto Rodriguez
I recently attended an inspiring webinar hosted by The Hunt Institute titled “High Quality Innovative Pathways to Strengthen the Teachers of Color Pipeline.” The discussion was a wake-up call and a reminder of the importance of diversity in education. 🌟
The speakers shared powerful insights:
➡️ Secretary Roberto Rodriguez of U.S. Department of Education: "You can’t be what you can’t see."
➡️ Dr. Michael Sorrell of Paul Quinn College: "You can be a student in America and maybe go through your entire K-12 education and NEVER have a Black teacher."
➡️ Dr. Mark Teoh of the Raikes Foundation: Asked important questions to the panelists and sought informative insights.
These words resonated deeply with me. Growing up, I had only one male teacher of color, my band director, Mr. Moore. His presence and mentorship profoundly impacted my life, showing me the importance of having diverse role models in education. Mr. Moore's guidance and belief in me helped shape my path and inspired me to dream bigger and be a representation to young people that look like me today.
💡 Here’s what we can do:
1. Support initiatives that diversify the teacher pipeline.
2. Advocate for better pay and resources for teachers.
3. Mentor and encourage young people from diverse backgrounds to pursue careers in education.
👉 Question: How has the presence (or absence) of diverse teachers impacted your life or career?

Boise State University has received the prestigious 2023 Degree Completion Award from the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) and the 2023 Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) Beacon Award for Excellence in Student Achievement and Success.
Recognized on a national scale, these awards acknowledge the Math Learning Center's groundbreaking strategies, including challenging students' math-related fears, utilizing specialized software for personalized learning, and implementing a distinctive "zero-credit corequisite" approach.
These initiatives significantly improved pass rates in early math classes and also broadened access to math-intensive degree programs, making Boise State a trailblazer in enhancing student success. The awards underscore the university's commitment to innovation and highlight the MLC's potential as a model for other institutions seeking to revolutionize their approaches to student achievement and excellence.

🌟Actively Shaping Tomorrow: The Power of Futures Thinking
#FuturesThinking goes far beyond predicting the future – it empowers individuals and institutions to actively shape tomorrow. This inclusive approach transcends disciplinary boundaries, and requires future thinkers to learn how to meaningfully tackle issues in a holistic way. Among other things, this kind of thinking can benefit educators, policymakers, and stakeholders in talent development by equipping them with the foresight to anticipate educational needs, formulate forward-looking policies, and nurture talent that is adaptable and prepared for future challenges in a rapidly evolving world.
In the context of this course with Professors Without Borders and Edinburgh Futures Institute, we are taking the conversation a step further: We are looking at how such a holistic approach can be taught to the next generation. Teaching futures thinking to children and young adults is crucial for equipping them with the skills and mindset to navigate uncertainty from the very beginning. Unlike traditional education, which mainly focuses on the use of current knowledge, futures thinking requires individuals to combine evidence-based analysis, critical thinking, complex problem solving and creativity in an impactful way. I predict that this transversal skill will be increasingly valuable in the years to come.
While upskilling our current talent pool with futures thinking and strategic foresight skills is crucial for navigating today's complexities, we must also look ahead and equip the next generation through our education system. This dual approach ensures that we not only prepare today's workforce to thrive in an evolving environment but also lay the foundation for future generations to anticipate and adapt to emerging challenges. By integrating futures thinking into education early on, we can empower individuals to contribute effectively to sustained economic growth and societal progress for decades to come.

Today marks the start of the Futures Thinking Programme, a joint project between Professors Without Borders and the Edinburgh Futures Institute.
The five week online course will focus on the importance of futures thinking and its value in education, and will highlight the benefits of such strategies in shaping and imagining what’s to come.
This is all with the goal of giving learners the tools they need to apply that style of thinking to their lives.
Thirty five applicants have been selected from twenty countries around the globe, representing educators and grassroots community trainers who work with students in upper secondary school, the early years of undergraduate education, or school leavers aged approximately 16-21.
We’re thrilled to see it get underway!

DEI programs are under attack.
For college campuses, there's good reason to fight back.
Social science research continues to show that DEI programs result in universities with better student learning. In this new article, IARA Research Projects Director Erica Licht shares five ways these programs have made a difference at colleges and universities throughout the U.S.:
1️⃣ Students perform better academically
2️⃣ Students are less biased
3️⃣ More satisfied faculty
4️⃣ More engaging curriculum and classrooms
5️⃣ Students are more prepared to be local leaders

These programs are good for students. They are good for our communities. They are good for our Nation. Unfortunately, many schools are not meeting the minimums to retain the programs, making this outcome more likely. A recent email from our Area Manager listed the enrollment numbers of each NJROTC unit based on the February 2024 report. 6 of the 29 schools did not meet the 100 Cadet minimum. 6 more barely met the 100 minimum with 105 or less students.
There are many factors that can influence enrollment. Leadership and vision are critical. Capital One asks, “What’s in your wallet?” I ask, What’s in your program? STEM offerings have had the biggest impact on numbers in my program. If you build it (better yet, if you let them build it), they will come. While I have 275 Cadets in my program today, the fall enrollment numbers are at 341 right now. STEM.
Instructors tend to follow the priorities defined by the metrics. For the Navy JROTC, those metrics are the points in the end of year report that determines which units get recognized as Distinguished Units. If the metrics are not leading to the desired results, then perhaps we are chasing the wrong points.

"Faculty success and student success are not in opposition to or independent of each other. Instead, faculty success and student success are intertwined such that faculty can pursue excellence in research, teaching, and service and apply their success in those areas to support student success"
