SEEING DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES = BETTER DECISIONS = TRUST Can you see a duck, a rabbit, both, or something else? During our engagement with captains and HODs, we often highlight the importance of taking the time to see all perspectives. By seeing other perspectives, leaders can make better decisions, as they understand the issue from not only their own viewpoint but the viewpoint of others. Good decisions build TRUST, particularly if they directly affect the crew. Making the effort to see all perspectives also has the advantage of helping 'sell' the decision, even if it is not the outcome others were championing. After all, if individuals know their views have been taken into account, they are far more likely to accept and trust the decision, than had they not been consulted or listened to at all. So, whether you decided it's a duck, a rabbit, both, or something else, hopefully you have at least taken the time to see the different perspectives! 'Trust and its importance to the command-crew relationship' is the topic for the next Superyacht LEADER Network Webinar on Thursday 23 November 2023 from 1700-1900 UTC. If you are a captain or hold a command-level position on a large yacht, please email Tracey Santrian to register at: tracey@bzmaritimeleadership.com. There is no charge and the event can be counted towards your Continuous Professional Development (CPD). #seafarers #maritime #superyacht #superyachts #yachtcrew #yachtcaptain #captain #maritimeindustry #marineindustry #shipmanagement #mentalhealthmatters #shipping #leadershipdevelopment #yacht #yachting #yachtlife #megayacht #Captains #superyachtindustry #boat #superyachts #yachtcharter #sailing #yachtworld #boating #boats #motoryacht #yachtlifestyle #megayachts #yachtcrew #yachtinglifestyle #yachtie #superyachtlife #ocean #luxuryyachts #yachtinglife #superyachtleadernetwork #maritimesafety #maritimetraining Chris Andreason John Brining Karl Santrian Superyacht Training Group

CREATING A POSITIVE ONBOARD CULTURE The recent Superyacht LEADER Network Webinar reinforced the important role of the Command Team in developing a positive onboard culture. Attendees identified that to best achieve this those in Command should focus on the strengths of their team and establish strategies that engender an upbeat ambience onboard. The discussions also highlighted that negativity, particularly from crew members who are Heads of Departments, can be very damaging and should be addressed as a priority. The following key considerations, for creating a positive onboard culture, were also suggested: o Understand how different leadership and crew management practices, along with ethical perspectives, impact crew behaviour and motivation. o Enable high levels of engagement (particularly by the HODs) which empowers them to influence behaviour and unlock the potential of their teams. o Give everyone onboard, including the most junior crew, a meaningful voice, and the opportunity to contribute to the yacht's ethos. o Promote personal growth, learning, and Continuous Professional Development (CPD). o Develop resilience onboard, both personal (Mental Fitness & Well-being) and organisational (eg effective manning strategy and sustainable working routines). LEADERS - WHAT CULTURE ARE YOU CREATING? The recent Superyacht LEADER Network Webinar underscored the critical role of leaders in shaping a positive onboard culture—arguably the most vital aspect of effective leadership. When participants were asked to define organisational culture, their responses highlighted common themes but varied in expression. Karl Santrian proposed this definition: "The values, beliefs, rituals, and attitudes that guide and influence leader and crew behaviour onboard." Tracey Santrian and Captain John Brining, however, found this phrase, offered by one of the participants, to better reflect their thoughts on the essence of onboard culture: "How leaders and crew behave when no one is watching." As leaders, please take a moment to reflect on the culture you are fostering onboard or ashore, whether consciously or not. Begin by clarifying what culture means to you and how your actions and values contribute to shaping it. Your influence is profound—embrace it to create a thriving environment for your team. Get it right and you will have happier people, higher performance, and better safety. Win-Win-Win! BZ Maritime Leadership specialise in the professional development of captains, crew, and shoreside professionals, inspiring them to chart a course to maritime leadership excellence. We aim to positively shape the future of leadership in the maritime industry, and we proudly collaborate with top-tier organisations and individuals. #yachting #megayacht #yachtcrew #yachtlife #chiefofficer #sailing #maritime #seafarers #shipmanagement #vessels #superyachts #captain #shipsandshipping #maritimesafety #Captains #ocean #superyacht

Calling UK Seafarers!
Just before you log off for the weekend....The Maritime Charities Group (MCG) has announced the launch of a vital new survey designed to gather insights into the demographic profile of the UK’s Merchant Navy and fishing fleet. This super quick survey is open to UK Nationals only and aims to address the challenges faced by our seafarers, including the cost-of-living crisis, the effects of the global pandemic, and the ongoing crewing crisis. Your responses will play a crucial role in shaping the future of welfare support offered by national maritime welfare charities. 👉 CLICK HERE https://lnkd.in/eTpHrFgK By participating, you'll help provide valuable evidence that will enable maritime welfare charities to tailor their services—such as ship visiting, port-based support, and advice on housing and welfare benefits—better to meet your needs and those of your dependents. This is your chance to raise concerns and influence the future of maritime welfare services for all those in need. Which could be you! The survey is open to current and former seafarers in all non-military sectors, as well as their dependents and providers of maritime welfare services. Let your voice be heard!
