At RITD, based in Brookshire, Texas, we have over two decades of specialized experience in industrial railroad engineering and development. As stalwarts in this niche field, we have observed a growing trend that is reshaping our industry: the departure of highly experienced and seasoned professionals and their replacement by newly graduated engineers, young project managers, and newcomers to the field.

While these newcomers bring fresh academic perspectives and adhere rigorously to specifications and standards to mitigate liability, their lack of practical experience often translates into overly cautious approaches. This trend is not without consequences. The caution exercised by the inexperienced —while well-intentioned—frequently results in inflated project estimates that can deter final investment decisions.

Projects that could have been viable with seasoned decision-making now face hurdles as the pervasive caution inflates costs unnecessarily. This shift not only impacts project feasibility but also raises questions about the balance between risk management and practical, cost-effective engineering solutions.

As we continue to lead and innovate within our field, we advocate for a balanced approach that values both academic knowledge and the irreplaceable insights that come from decades of hands-on experience. Understanding the cost of excessive caution is essential for our industry to thrive and for our clients to succeed.
