Strong message about lower women representation in workforce. An advertisement from a matrimonial company in India: Shaadi.org (Shaadi = Marriage). A girl child’s innocent response to why a ghost vanished when she apparently reached a certain age, brings to forefront the deep-rooted thinking on this topic. Her response is that she got married and stopped working. A few thoughts: 1. Having lived in different countries / continents, it is clear to me that the issue of women leaving workforce after marriage or having children is everywhere and not just India. 2. While we talk about gender equality, unless some of the issues are addressed at systemic level, it will be difficult to come out of it. For that, it would require investments and support from Governments and Corporations alike. 3. Nonetheless, a family’s support will keep creating success stories. https://lnkd.in/ecp45tij

Comparing and contrasting our responses to each query revealed both our unique perspectives and our shared experiences, making it a profoundly enriching experience. The beauty of the program lay in the presence of four divas: myself, Bubbli Malik ji, Mehrub Moiz Awan, MD, MPH, and Nayyab Ali. As individuals, we were insignificant. I‘ve been invited to hold a lecture on populism today in St Johann im Pongau, Salzburg, in the framework of women‘s rights week. So, I chose to prepare a lecture on gender equality agendas and female figures in radical-right populist parties. It hasn‘t been exactly easy to prepare this lecture since I would rather celebrate then criticise women. But being a woman doesn‘t automatically make you a champion of diversity or an ally of women struggling to become economically independent or reconcile career and family life; especially if we zoom into their family policies that aim to increase the birthrate but discourage women’s participation in the labor market, and then statements against the right to abortion, or same-sex partnerships. Everything related to diversity is often portrayed as the ‚enemy of the family.‘ Being a prominent woman in a radical-right populist party does have some pleasant effects as a party strategy, though, in that a woman often functions to soften the macho-image and other unsympathic aspects of these parties. Happy to be contributing to a critical view of radical-right populism, the role of women in such men-dominated parties, and the problematic aspects of their gender-related agendas.
