Canada Day: Reimagining Our Shared Future On this Canada Day, we stand at a crossroads of history and possibility. Today, we honor not just a nation, but a vision of what we can become. First and foremost, we acknowledge the Indigenous peoples - First Nations, Métis, and Inuit - whose ancestral lands we occupy. Their millennia of stewardship, wisdom, and resilience form the true foundation of this country. As allies, our role is clear: 1. Listen deeply to Indigenous voices 2. Learn our shared history - both triumphs and tragedies 3. Act decisively for justice and reconciliation This Canada Day, I challenge you: • Identify the traditional territories you're on (native-land.ca) • Support an Indigenous-led organization in your community • Commit to one concrete action advancing reconciliation in your sphere of influence True patriotism isn't about flags or fireworks. It's about fostering a nation where every person's dignity is upheld, where historical wrongs are addressed, and where diverse cultures flourish side by side. The path forward isn't always easy, but it's necessary. It requires courage to confront uncomfortable truths, humility to learn, and determination to create change. So today, let's celebrate not what Canada has been, but what it can become. A country that truly honors its First Peoples, embraces its diversity, and leads globally in justice and reconciliation. It commemorates the day in 1867 when the British North America Act (now known as the Constitution Act, 1867) came into effect, uniting the colonies of Canada (Ontario and Quebec), New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia into a single country called Canada. The process of provinces and territories joining Canada took place over many years, following the initial confederation in 1867. Here are the dates when each province and territory joined Canada: 1. **Ontario** (originally part of the Province of Canada) - July 1, 1867 2. **Quebec** (originally part of the Province of Canada) - July 1, 1867 3. **New Brunswick** - July 1, 1867 4. **Nova Scotia** - July 1, 1867 5. **Manitoba** - July 15, 1870 6. **British Columbia** - July 20, 1871 7. **Prince Edward Island** - July 1, 1873 8. **Alberta** - September 1, 1905 9. **Saskatchewan** - September 1, 1905 10. **Newfoundland and Labrador** - March 31, 1949 Additionally, the territories joined as follows: 1. **Northwest Territories** - July 15, 1870 2. **Yukon** - June 13, 1898 3. **Nunavut** - April 1, 1999
