In my role as a healthcare consultant, I've seen that skilled nursing operators and administrators often don’t realize they have an issue until it’s too late and the doors are closing. The gentleman I spoke with corroborated this, sharing that he often sees struggling facilities reject management help, only for him to end up buying these facilities within two years. 🧠💡 It made me ponder the fundamental question: When should we set pride aside and ask for help? It's not about admitting failure but recognizing the limitations of what we can handle alone. Sometimes, seeking assistance is the best step toward providing high-quality care for our residents and ensuring that our staff keep their jobs. Let's break the stigma around asking for help. It's okay to say, "Yes, I need assistance," because that choice can make all the difference in maintaining excellence and sustainability in our facilities. What are your thoughts? ✳ Tell me one thing that you're proud of with one of your residents ✳ When I was a nursing home administrator, I always started our all-staff meetings the same way: by asking everyone to share one resident they were proud of or a story of something great that had happened with a resident since our last meeting. We all know that long-term care presents many challenges, and it is easy to get caught up in the stress and criticism. However, the times when it's the most difficult are also the times when it's most important to reminisce on the good. Reminisce on the positive effect you're having on someone's life, someone who truly needs your help. In an industry where recognition can be scarce, celebrating these small wins is essential for maintaining morale and reinforcing the value of your efforts. So, remember to take a minute today to think about some of the great things your facility is doing. And if no one has told you lately, you're doing a great job. How can we make visiting grandma or grandpa easier? When a nursing home closes or consolidates, families often bear the burden of increased travel times to new facilities. To help families see to their loved ones, nursing homes can: 🔹 Leverage transportation options. Have an extra van or two used for resident transport? Consider offering a shuttle from a central location for patients’ families. 🔹 Help residents and families set up Zoom accounts so they can communicate more often or make sure staff is trained in helping residents use technology.
