Reflecting on my time training in a FIRES team at the 2nd Ranger Battalion, I can't emphasize enough the pivotal role of Joint Terminal Attack Controllers (JTACs) in the US Army. Having worked alongside these elite professionals, it's clear that they are among the most proficient and lethal individuals in the entire military. The article "The JTAC Imperative" by Carlo Muñoz illuminates the importance, difficulty, and complexity of the JTAC role, especially in special operations. JTACs, as Zach Sherwood mentioned in the article, serve as the emergency conduit for airpower when needed most, particularly in challenging environments like Afghanistan. While Afghanistan's permissive airspace has provided ample opportunities for JTACs to hone their skills and provide critical air support to ground forces, changes in military strategy and rules of engagement have posed new challenges. As the US and NATO gradually withdraw from combat operations in Afghanistan, JTACs face increased restrictions on the use of air power and a shift towards Afghan forces taking over fighting operations. Despite the evolving nature of warfare and the challenges it presents, JTACs continue to play a crucial role in coordinating airstrikes and providing armed overwatch for joint, Afghan-led combat operations. Their ability to swiftly adapt to changing battlefield dynamics, identify targets, and deliver ordnance is unmatched, instilling a sense of resilience and confidence in their peers. Having witnessed firsthand the expertise of JTAC leaders in my unit, I can attest to their exceptional training and proficiency. The current transformation phase the USMC is undergoing is focused on ways the Marines as a distributed force can more effectively support the joint force. This is the most recent phase of change for the modern USMC, which has followed the significant change driven by the coming of the Osprey, the lead on the F-35 global enterprise, and now a new aviation capability, the CH-53K coming to the force. In many ways, fielding effective and efficient c-UAS capabilities is another MRAP moment for DoD. Just as IEDs came to define the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, weaponized UAS have become a cornerstone of contemporary warfare. DoD must match the urgency of the UAS threat with swift deployment of next-generation countermeasures to protect U.S. and allied militaries from this asymmetric threat. The major takeaway from this exercise is the importance of threat detection changes these aircraft identify from threat objects. Many systems operate with a typical system footprint, but these systems have other options when it comes to wartime. You can call these overclocking or surprise modes, which will be tricky to identify in stressful situations.

The US Army has contracted Mastodon Design LLC, a CACI Company to develop an electronic warfare suite prototype for the dismounted soldier. The company will build and demonstrate the Terrestrial Layer System – Brigade Combat Team (TLS-BCT) Manpack prototype for $1.5 million in nine months. The TLS-BCT is an integrated suite of signals intelligence, electronic warfare, and cyberspace operations. The Operational Environment 2024-2034: Large-Scale Combat Operations July 31, 2024, TRADOC G2 https://lnkd.in/eEbysbJe The TRADOC G2 is responsible for defining, describing, and delivering the Operational Environment (OE) to the Army. Since the last assessment in 2021, global conditions have evolved significantly, necessitating a reassessment of the OE. The result is The Operational Environment 2024-2034: Large-Scale Combat Operations (LSCO), which focuses on the conditions and implications of modern LSCO that the U.S. Army will have to face in the next 10 years. The objective is to inform the Army about aspects of LSCO and their impact on operations, thereby supporting Army Senior Leaders’ decision making and the U.S. Army’s planning and execution of training so the Army can successfully execute its contributions to national security objectives. To achieve victory in the Operational Environment of the 21st century, the U.S. Army must know these enemies like it knew the Soviets in the 20th century. China, the pacing threat, is building defense systems to attain its global ambitions. It has the largest military in the world by personnel and the ability to execute a whole-of-nation approach to conflict that can quickly galvanize its industrial base. China’s modernization process has seen rapid technological transformation toward its vision of “informationized” and “intelligentized” warfare. It is also advancing an ambitious professional military education system with the aim of building a strong NCO corps. Meanwhile, Russia, the acute threat, has been mired in an invasion of Ukraine since 2022. While not seeing the success it had hoped for initially, Russia is gaining combat experience in large-scale combat operations and proving that simply outlasting an enemy is a potentially valid military option. The war in Ukraine has shown that the next fight will prominently feature information warfare and focus on multidomain effects. Fires will be the center of gravity, making protection a priority and maneuver difficult. The information contained herein should be transmitted to, and understood by, U.S. Army Soldiers of every rank and at every echelon. Our Soldiers—our people—are our greatest strength and we must do everything we can to strengthen the profession of warfighting. Competence as an Army professional starts with understanding the threat, but it does not end there. Every Leader has the obligation of being a continuous and self-reflective learner outside of traditional professional military education and training.
