The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) has officially decommissioned its fleet of Type 74 main battle tanks (MBTs). This decision marks the end of an era for a vehicle that has been a stalwart of Japan’s armored forces for over four decades. The Ministry of Defense (MoD) has not only retired the Type 74 tanks but has also disbanded the units that operated them. This includes the JGSDF 9th Tank Battalion in Iwate, the 10th Tank Battalion in Imazu, and the 13th Tank Troop. The reorganization, completed by the end of the Japanese financial year 2023, resulted in the disposal of approximately 90 Type 74 tanks. With the decommissioning of the remaining Type 74 units in March 2024, the personnel from these units are being reassigned primarily to combat reconnaissance battalions. Developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, the Type 74 was designed to address the evolving needs of the JGSDF and to supplement the earlier Type 61. Inspired by the best features of contemporary Western designs such as the US M60 Patton and the German Leopard 1, the Type 74 featured a rifled 105 mm M68 gun and entered service in 1980. However, by this time, many Western nations had already moved on to more advanced designs. The Type 74 was eventually succeeded by the heavier and more capable Type 90, and more recently, the cutting-edge Type 10 tank. Here is Part II of my article published by @AARCAusArmy. In it I conclude that for 1st (Australian) Division to achieve both its potential as an ‘orchestra of war’ and to deliver on Chief of Army’s intent, it should be assigned multifunctional brigades and enabling units. Specifically, it requires elements of 6th Brigade, 17th Brigade and the soon to be raised 10th Brigade. The force assignment of these brigades and their units to 1st (Australian) Division would not preclude these enabling capabilities from being available to 2nd (Australian) Division, the rest of the Army or the Integrated Force. What it would provide is the focused stewardship of these capabilities to support the Australian Army’s accelerated preparedness for operations today, and support the synchronised delivery of landing craft, long-range fires, and infantry fighting vehicles for littoral manoeuvre tomorrow. https://lnkd.in/gfZMSBv9

The major takeaway from this exercise is the importance of threat detection changes these aircraft identify from threat objects. Many systems operate with a typical system footprint, but these systems have other options when it comes to wartime. You can call these overclocking or surprise modes, which will be tricky to identify in stressful situations.

And also — units of the Territorial Defense Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, assault and special battalions, companies of attack drones… When a unit or group of soldiers on a mission has reliable encrypted communication, our soldiers can operate as efficiently as possible and hide their intentions from the enemy. And vice versa: loss of communication with command and adjacent units on the front line can have just as disastrous consequences as the encirclement. 576 radio stations are a critical everyday item for the army. "Campaign of learning"?? The official way of say, "We were wrong." Just say it plainly. Whatever they call it, at least they are adding back critical capabilities they axed. From article: "Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 269 will get reactivated in July, according to Flanagan." "The December 2022 deactivation took place as part of Force Design 2030, the Corps’ plan for modernizing to meet the threat of technologically sophisticated adversaries like the Chinese military. As part of the plan, the service has gotten rid of some units and assets to free up money for other capabilities." "In the initial 2020 document laying out Force Design 2030, then-Commandant Gen. David Berger called for the Marine Corps to cut at least two of its seven light attack helicopter squadrons. “While this capability has a certain amount of relevance to crisis and contingency missions which we must still be prepared to execute, it is operationally unsuitable for our highest-priority maritime challenges and excess to our needs with the divestment of three infantry battalions,” Berger wrote." From DoD press release: The United States retains the capability to deploy forces on short notice. The Department of Defense continues to maintain a significant amount of capability in the region and to dynamically adjust our force posture based on the evolving security situation. The Secretary has directed that the USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN Carrier Strike Group (CSG) remain in the USCENTCOM theater and that the USS Wasp Amphibious Ready Group / Marine Expeditionary Unit (ARG/MEU) will continue to operate in the Eastern Mediterranean. This afloat posture is complemented by DoD’s elevated fighter and attack squadron presence, including F-22, F-15E, F-16, and A-10 aircraft, and we will further reinforce our defensive air-support capabilities in the coming days. ------- The WASP ARG has several thousand North Carolina Marines with the 24th MEU. The F-15E thing interested me. There are only a few F-15E operational squadrons, and a bunch are in Goldsboro at Seymour Johnson AFB. They were flying over the Middle East last Spring and knocked down a lot of Iranian stuff fired at Israel. But a bunch of U.S. F15Es from RAF Lakenheath were also there. So I dunno. Here's a photo from last week that popped up. But I don't know which squadron this F-15E belongs to. The military talks about deployments in different ways, for different purposes. There are a lot of deployments that get no publicity. Then there are well-publicized deployments. First, the service wants folks to know their folks are in the fight. Second, it is hard move a few thousand Marines on to ships at Morehead City without someone noticing. Or paratroopers onto big planes at the Green Ramp at Fort Liberty. But often you don't know until units are in some action and the DoD puts out something.
