🌍 Today, the Diabetes Alliance had the privilege of attending a Joint Session at DIA EGYPT 2024 virtually, where Siyabonga Kwanele Zuma and I presented on "Inclusive Patient-Centred Diabetes Care: Amplifying the Voice of People with Diabetes in Decision-Making". We discussed how critical it is to shift from a provider-led approach to one that empowers people living with diabetes to actively participate in their care. Some key points from our presentation included: 🔹 The need to involve patients in decision-making, ensuring their preferences, values, and goals are respected. 🔹 How shared decision-making and patient education can improve treatment adherence and long-term outcomes. 🔹 Real-life examples of inclusive care models, including our work at the University Of Pretoria Diabetes Research Centre, where we supported patients with type 2 diabetes to start and titrate their insulin effectively through tailored education and support. 🔹 The importance of integrating patient advocacy at all levels, from clinical care to policy development. 3 learnings from attending the SIETAR Europa congress: 🎢 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱: diving deeper into topics of my preference was fun, but my favourite sessions were those on topics I had little to no knowledge about because I was able to uncover my blind spots (i.e. areas of learning). 🔍 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗸𝗲𝘆: someone in the field may share their thoughts or jokes confidently, but that doesn't mean I have to automatically agree. Critically reflecting on comments and situations strengthened my confidence in forming my own opinion. 🎇 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗺𝗽𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹: having the opportunity to connect with people that I might have never met in my everyday life was a game-changer to exchange views, reflect on sessions, and thereby keep learning.
