It was no female representation as Women were not entitled to compete, because de Coubertin felt that their inclusion would be "impractical, uninteresting, unaesthetic and incorrect". From there to today, it took 128 years to achieve gender equality in the Olympics. Paris Olympics 2024 has equal male and female participation- a 50:50 ratio. From 2.2% in 1900 to 50% in 2024. It's a moment of Victory for the Women as well as the International Olympics Committee. Said that, People who say why feminism, why only ' Women's Day' might think twice. Despite all the feminism, it took 128 years to achieve equality. And this is just the Olympics. Look at Fortune 500, In 1998 there were just 2 women CEOs, In 2024 they are 52. But it's 52 out of 500... Clearly a long way to go... For corporates... Society... Paris Olympics has come to a close and there were several inspiring moments, including the fact that this was the first Olympics to achieve gender equality. However one visual that will be etched in my mind forever is where the two women, one of them the most decorated gymnast of our times, bowing down to the gold medal winner. Why is this visual so powerful? In a world where opportunities for women, especially women of color, are not equal, we have to navigate not only societal barriers but also women who do not support other women. There’s been research and findings on the queen bee syndrome and the reality is that with scarcity of opportunities, there’s invariably competition. This picture speaks a thousand words of not diminishing one’s achievements while celebrating another’s. I wish and hope that until we achieve gender equality, even when opportunities are scarce, we have the power and courage to celebrate every woman who breaks the barrier to create a more equal world. March 8th is an international day that celebrates the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It's more about an opportunity to draw attention annually to the importance of women's rights issues rather than just a holiday. In post-Soviet countries, the meaning of International Women's Day has often been wrapped in tulips and vanilla postcards. Some women enjoy this packaging, while others do not, but that should not be a reason to overlook this day as an opportunity to advocate for action to accelerate gender parity. On this day various events, discussions, and initiatives are usually held worldwide to promote women's rights and gender equality. One such event this year is organized by U.N.
