As a fire engineer, we cannot ignore the fact that mass timber construction is gaining momentum and becoming more widely used. Although we have not seen many of them in Hong Kong and China, successful projects in Europe and US have demonstrated their value and feasibility. Timber is combustible and it cannot be treated to achieve non-combustibility. Timber structure will add to the fire load that steel and concrete buildings do not have. It is a challenge we have to face and help to overcome.
Mass Timber: The Future of Construction? We believe mass timber construction has huge potential. Developers are building larger and taller structures using this innovative material - thick, laminated layers of wood. Mass timber is inherently a low-carbon material, but as with any new construction method, we need to learn how to use it safely, efficiently, and sustainably. Hear from experts, including Andrew Lawrence, Arup Director and Fellow, as he joins the Financial Times Rethink channel to discuss groundbreaking mass timber projects and their implications for the future of greener urban development. Depaving, or removing paved surfaces like concrete or asphalt, helps mitigate the urban heat island effect in several ways: 1. Reduced Heat Absorption 2. Increased Permeability 3. Promotion of Green Spaces 4. Improved Air Quality Overall, depaving can play a crucial role in combating the urban heat island effect by promoting cooler, greener, and more sustainable urban environments. https://lnkd.in/d5-wtSZB

We design living organisms and like us, they need specific requirements to thrive and survive! The success of green infrastructure depends on our ability to carefully plan and construct it. Integrating blue, green, and grey infrastructure can often be challenging, but it's a necessary requirement to produce an environment-centred design. Pairing with industry experts is key in optimising soil, drainage and irrigation requirements, and with detailed attention to these we can create sustainable vibrant, long term landscapes.
Construction Detailing for Green Infrastructure 🌿 Successful green infrastructure is dependent on careful and considered construction detailing. Construction detailing of green infrastructure elements involves selecting appropriate materials, preparing robust specifications, and implementing techniques that prioritise ecological benefit. Even components that seem simply, like a planter bed, require a thorough understanding of drainage options and soil volume to set them up for success. Next week, DCI Principal Roger Heeringa will travel to London to take part in the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) 2024 International Conference. Roger’s presentation, “Progress on Low-Carbon Concrete in the US,” will explore the current state of the move to decarbonize concrete in the United States. This topic is a piece of the answer to the conference’s overarching question: should we, on a global scale and in our own communities, build new buildings and cities or renew existing ones? #DCIEngineers #DCISeattle #DCISustainability #CTBUH #CTBUHInternational #LowCarbon #LowCarbonConcrete #Sustainability #SustainableDesign #StructuralEngineering #StructuralEngineer Learn more about the conference: https://lnkd.in/eQPZhzv

Historic buildings. You can look at them as the bridge between the past and present. They're more than just structures — they highlight our history and add character. But, when it comes to restoring historic buildings, it requires skill and special expertise. And we have picked up a few valuable lessons along our journey. Here are three things we keep top of mind when we're involved in a project: https://zurl.co/nglq #RoncoBuilt #construction #BuildingExcellence

In May we hosted a masterclass, 'Improving Energy Efficiency in Traditional Buildings' at the Irish Georgian Society City Assembly House in Dublin. The masterclass aligned with the recently published Irish Government Guidance Document on the topic, and the speakers included leading experts in energy conservation, heritage, and architecture. In our video, key speakers and attendees share invaluable tips on retrofitting #traditionalbuildings. Their insights focus on achieving energy efficiency upgrades while maintaining the architectural integrity and character of historic structures. In the process of upgrading #historicbuildings, we also allow for vacant properties to be repurposed and occupied once again. There are grants available to support these types of projects: 🟢 Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant: Up to €50,000 for converting a vacant property into a home or rental. 🟢 Derelict Property Top-up Grant: Additional €20,000 for properties that are structurally unsound, bringing the total grant to €70,000. 🟢 Traditional Farm Buildings Grant: ranging from €4000 to €30,000 covering up to 75% of the conservation work. Applications for 2024 closed on March 27th 2024. 🟢 Built Heritage Investment Scheme (BHIS): Up to €50,000 for custodians and owners of protected structures. 🟢 You can also contact the SEAI to find out what other grants are available. With the insights shared in our video and the use of suitable materials for protecting the integrity of such buildings, we can reduce the building's energy use and be a step closer to meeting our climate targets. https://loom.ly/jCe2wms 👉 'Improving Energy Efficiency in Traditional Buildings' guidance document: https://loom.ly/XxIDmIs 👉 'Caring for our Vernacular Heritage' guidance document: https://loom.ly/qHPv67s 👉 'A Living Tradition' guidance document: https://loom.ly/LqHHYLo 👉 'Built Heritage Investment Scheme' guidance document: https://loom.ly/kiA76Kg #EnergyEfficiency #Retrofit #SustainableBuilding #IrishArchitecture #HeritageBuildings
