Thrilled to see our paper published open access! It all started with a curiosity: if only a small percentage of #cosmetics list PFASs as an ingredient, are they significant #PFAS sources to #wastewater treatment plants? But how can we even figure out the total mass of PFASs in cosmetics if most of these chemicals cannot be quantified with existing analytical methods? Well, if we cannot measure it, we can calculate it, and that's what we did... a complex back-of-the-envelope calculation! We had to navigate the lack of data, but were able to design a reproducible method that allowed us to figure out an answer. Check it out: https://lnkd.in/gnHTrHNY with Thomas Bruton, Kyle Harris, Logan Hayes, Christopher Leonetti, Vivek Mathrani, PhD, DABT, Abigail Noble, Diana Phelps, PhD

In September, I'll have been with with the California Environmental Protection Agency for ✌️ years! I'm the #SocialMediaManager at the California Department of Toxic Substances Control. Since I started on the Media Relations team in 2022, I increased our social media audience by 6,943% and launched ✌️ new channels. #GovernmentSocialMedia wasn't ready for me. Hootsuite analytics show our audience growth rate is higher than the industry average & we have 4X the post engagement rate than other government agencies. Our #LinkedIn impressions doubled since I started. And despite my passionate distaste for the platform, #DTSC has never been so SEEN on #Twitter / #X until this year: 📈user profile clicks are 980% 🔺 📈post link clicks are 752% 🔺 📈impressions are 980% 🔺 📈post reactions/likes are 388% 🔺 The best & worst thing about my job is learning so much about #EnvironmentalScience that it changed my entire life. Take the green pill & join me in my crunchy era: https://lnkd.in/e5wpNkQY PS, if you're a #CaliforniaScientist, I hear you & I would give you all raises if I could. ### /// TLDR /// I'm really good at #SocialMedia, I made this video & I bum people out at parties. Filter your water & buy cleaner cosmetics.

Over 1,000 lbs of 'forever chemicals' from cosmetics, especially hair care products and facial cleansers, reach California wastewater every year, according to a new study published today by our partners at the California Department of Toxic Substances Control. We're excited that data from Clearya, among other sources, could contribute to this first study ever to estimate the total mass of PFASs contained in cosmetics sold in California. 😊 Well done Simona Balan, Thomas Bruton, Christopher Leonetti, Abigail Noble, and colleagues! 👏 Read the study: https://lnkd.in/ewg6QWnr #DTSC #Clearya #ForeverChemicals

Whilst we still await any significant number of claims for exposure to PFAS in the UK, research now shows that there are higher levels of dermal absorption (absorption through the skin) than had previously been thought. Certainly with some PFAS containing products such as fire resistant clothing, dermal absorption may well be the main method of ingestion. We continue to wait for the impact of PFAS litigation in the UK. #weightmans #weightmansdisease #pfas #personalinjury #litigation #foreverchemicals https://lnkd.in/e9GvCfhz

The Environmental Protection Authority (#EPA) of #NewZealand implemented a ban on the use of #PFAS in cosmetics on January 30, 2024. In addition to the PFAS ban, the Cosmetic Products Group Standard has undergone other updates to ensure the safety of cosmetic products and align with rules in Europe, such as "non-hazardous cosmetic products" introduction, nanomaterials record-keeping requirements, precautions and labels, etc. Details here: https://lnkd.in/gXDa4h_k #pfas #cosmetic #ingredient
