California has witnessed an 80% decline in rooftop solar installations, resulting in over 17,000 job layoffs (representing 22% of the industry), with more anticipated. The state, once at the forefront of residential solar, attributes the decline to unpopular policy shifts such as the implementation of Net Energy Metering (NEM) 3.0 and recent market rate cuts for rooftop solar generation by renters, schools, and farms. These policy changes have reduced compensation rates for exporting local solar energy to the grid by approximately 75%. Great to see the surge in American clean energy jobs reflected in the Department of Energy’s latest report. This 2023 analysis shows clean energy employment growing by 3.9% from 2021 to 2022, outpacing the broader economy’s 3.1% growth rate. Notably, states like Texas and Idaho are leading the way, with some of the fastest rates of clean energy job growth.  Job creation like this is crucial, making a long-term, positive impact on local economies and American communities. The crushing knock-on effects of California's #NEM 3.0. changes are coming to light across the state. Since its implementation in April '23, net metering credits have been reduced by nearly 75%, while payback periods for homeowners have increased. Commercial #solar will start feeling the squeeze in 2024. Typically longer sales cycles have shielded the market temporarily, but signs are showing significant strain on the horizon. Bids have stalled out, signaling a shaky year ahead. Statewide reporting shows: ▶ 22% solar job loss ▶ 59% residential solar + storage contractors across the state expect layoffs ▶ Solar sales down 77-85% y.o.y ▶ Interconnection application volume down 66-83% y.o.y One potential lifeline is the “Million Solar Batteries Initiative” which could enable the adoption of thousands of #DERs across the state. But without modifications to the red tape currently delaying utility interconnection and simplified permitting, it may be a year of missed opportunities. Many say a reckoning will come, but 2024 should have seen California's residential solar market reaching terminal velocity. Outline Next Steps: Conclude with a clear and straightforward call to action, making it easy for the customer to move forward with your solution.
