"One key issue is that the industry requires a shift in talent. The mining sector has relied on certain ways of operating for years, but now it needs to adapt and become more technologically advanced. Unfortunately, mining and heavy industries like cement and steel are not seen as attractive to younger talent, which leads to a shortage of skilled workers." Here are key insights from our latest interview with Géraldine Picaud, CEO of SGS as part of our upcoming report " The New Era of Mining" 2024 edition. Discover the key trends and developments shaping the future of the mining industry. An interesting story by CNBC highlighting the US mining industry's talent problem and how it will impact operations in the future: https://hubs.la/Q02L2GZ20 More than half the country's mining workforce, about 220,000 workers, are expected to retire by 2029. And the number of candidates willing to fill those jobs is shrinking. At the same time, demand for rare earth minerals for batteries used to progress to clean energy is rising. 384 new mines will need to be built to meet demand for EVs by 2035. Mining projects require people with specialised skills and experience to keep operations running smoothly. But numbers of graduates with mining-related qualifications is declining. As Clayton Walker, COO - Copper at Rio Tinto says in the story, "The war for talent is real." How is your mine setting itself up for success from a talent point of view? Martha Preston and Agata Sobolewska share some more insights on the talent crunch in this article: https://lnkd.in/g99WuaAQ

Into the depths of Round Mountain… At the bottom of the active open-pit gold mine, Kinross Gold Corporation is exploring underground options to extend the mine’s life. Open-pit mining must remove ALL the earth above ore to extract the good stuff. But when it comes to underground, tunnels can target the REALLY good stuff without worrying about what’s above. It’s all mining, but underground might as well be a different world compared to surface. It’s awesome to see both operating within the same site! #betterdirtworld
