It’s been tragically clear for too long that large vehicles pose a fundamental risk to people walking, wheeling and cycling. It’s the role of national and local Government to lead on reducing these risks. As well as changing the road environment, we have to drastically improve how large vehicles are designed and operated. Cycling Scotland, Sustrans Scotland and Cycling UK in Scotland jointly re-commit to supporting urgent and lasting action from Government.

💰 The aim of the Big Bike Revival is to make cycling accessible for everyone. 🚲 It provides funding to community and voluntary organisations to deliver free events that encourage people to start cycling, cycle more often or to take up cycling again if they have lost their confidence. 🚴♀️ If your organisation can run sessions to encourage more people to cycle, you can apply for a grant of up to £3,500. 🚴♂️ Your activities should be for people returning to cycling, complete beginners or people cycling non-regularly and should include fixing bikes, teaching cycle and maintenance skills, and taking people on led bike rides on local routes. Cycling UK has published a five-year strategy, which aims to attract higher engagement in cycling, with the mission statement outlining the elimination of poisonous air pollution, obesity and traffic congestion. Their five-year strategic objectives are: -Improve perceptions of cycling so that everyone sees the benefits - Boost the number and diversity of people who cycle - Make cycling an even more positive experience - Increase transport choice by enabling and encouraging more people to cycle local journeys - Achieve greater impact by becoming the best possible charity we can be Read the full strategy here: https://lnkd.in/eZwCCnNe

Look no further - we have now published our report that aggregates data from across the UK. 💡 Sustrans’ Walking and Cycling Index, the largest independent survey of active travel in the UK, has revealed that a majority (56%) of people want to shift investment in road building schemes to funding options for walking, wheeling, cycling and public transport. 🚶♀️ 👨🦽 🚲 The report also shows greater public demand for active travel over driving, with 50% wanting to walk more and 43% wanting to cycle more. Today Sustrans launch their Walking and Cycling Index – 'the biggest ever survey of walking, wheeling and cycling across the UK and Ireland.' The #WalkingCyclingIndex supports leaders of cities and towns to understand and improve walking, wheeling and cycling 👏 👏

This chimes with our own research which revealed almost 8 out of 10 drivers would use #publictransport more if it was better, and more than 9 in 10 support Government investment in improving the #publictransport network as an alternative to driving. That's why we were so disappointed to see #HighSpeed2 rail funding transferred to low-return road schemes. Time and time again, research has proven that investing in public transport delivers the greatest return for the taxpayer, whatever metric is used.
