Greater Cambridge is still the UK's leading city region for walking and cycling according to the latest #WalkingAndCyclingIndex. A new report published by charity Sustrans in partnership with Greater Cambridge Partnership delves into the active travel habits of residents and explores the benefits along with the measures needed to encourage more people to walk or cycle. In total over 155million walking, cycling and wheeling trips were made in the past year while 56% of people walk five days a week or more, and 45% of residents ride a bike at least once a week. Other findings include that 28% of residents want to drive less, yet 44% of residents often use a car because no other transport options are available. It’s been tragically clear for too long that large vehicles pose a fundamental risk to people walking, wheeling and cycling. It’s the role of national and local Government to lead on reducing these risks. As well as changing the road environment, we have to drastically improve how large vehicles are designed and operated. Cycling Scotland, Sustrans Scotland and Cycling UK in Scotland jointly re-commit to supporting urgent and lasting action from Government.

💰 The aim of the Big Bike Revival is to make cycling accessible for everyone. 🚲 It provides funding to community and voluntary organisations to deliver free events that encourage people to start cycling, cycle more often or to take up cycling again if they have lost their confidence. 🚴♀️ If your organisation can run sessions to encourage more people to cycle, you can apply for a grant of up to £3,500. 🚴♂️ Your activities should be for people returning to cycling, complete beginners or people cycling non-regularly and should include fixing bikes, teaching cycle and maintenance skills, and taking people on led bike rides on local routes. Thanks Jim Bowles for tagging me in this post, I agree 100% Urgent action is needed to end the deaths, life changing injuries and collisions caused by the large vehicle design fault, The restricted field of view that 83% of the trucks on our roads have, they don't afford the drivers the Uninterrupted 160 degrees field of view that they are legally required to have. There is a simple retrofittable solution that I've developed and launching soon For more information on Viz-Ovalz® E-Mail - info@viz-ovalz.scot or contact Mobile++44 (0) 7708091511 Office 01259 726417 #visionzero #roadsafety #fleetsafety #blindspots #cyclists, #investmentopportunities #innovation #launching #fleetmanagers #collisionavoidance #RHA, #CLOCS, #FTA, #BRAKE #insuranceindustry #insurancesolutions

This is so good:
I love this new ad from the Dutch Government, encouraging citizens not to take their motor vehicles for short journeys. Even the Dutch, with their high levels of everyday cycling, still need to ensure cycling is promoted and backed by new infrastructure. #cycling #walking #activetravel #netherlands #cyclingindustry Tessel Van Essen Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the United Kingdom

This chimes with our own research which revealed almost 8 out of 10 drivers would use #publictransport more if it was better, and more than 9 in 10 support Government investment in improving the #publictransport network as an alternative to driving. That's why we were so disappointed to see #HighSpeed2 rail funding transferred to low-return road schemes. Time and time again, research has proven that investing in public transport delivers the greatest return for the taxpayer, whatever metric is used.
