New data from PeopleForBikes finds that England is lagging behind Europe for how cycling-friendly its towns and cities are. England received an average city score of 59 out of 100, compared with an average European city score of 71 when England is excluded. “The uptake of cycling in cities is directly connected to government priorities. When government leaders invest in making cycling more accessible and appealing, more people choose cycling for everyday transportation,” PeopleForBikes President and CEO Jenn Dice told Zag Daily. “If more cities in England make similar long-term commitments to invest in cycling, they will gradually catch up to their European peers.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/e7ttCK9p

Call out to all Cycling Club members! As we see clubs disappear and less people riding we need to ask ourselves what is going on with our sport. Cycling Clubs need to address the demographic they are appealing to and who they are attracting into the sport. Without a doubt we need to encourage the youth element into the sport. No it’s not easy and it takes dedicated members of the Club to take a lead on this and give up something that is precious to us all - time! All clubs and namely members need to start stepping up and volunteering to take a lead in bringing on a youth section in all clubs or else we will see continued decline in our sport. No it’s not an easy task following the guidelines set down by British Cycling but those guidelines are there for good reason. So you can’t let the committee in your club, who are probably already overstretched in keeping the club going take on yet another task, it has to be you or others in the club giving up time to help achieve this aim. We need more young people taking up the sport to keep it alive. #britishcycling #cycling #volunteer #youthdevelopment #engagement #inclusivity #leadership

💰 The aim of the Big Bike Revival is to make cycling accessible for everyone. 🚲 It provides funding to community and voluntary organisations to deliver free events that encourage people to start cycling, cycle more often or to take up cycling again if they have lost their confidence. 🚴♀️ If your organisation can run sessions to encourage more people to cycle, you can apply for a grant of up to £3,500. 🚴♂️ Your activities should be for people returning to cycling, complete beginners or people cycling non-regularly and should include fixing bikes, teaching cycle and maintenance skills, and taking people on led bike rides on local routes. The European Parliament's Transport Committee showed serious love for #cycling today by voting overwhelmingly for the 'European Cycling Declaration,' the EU's most ambitious political commitment for more and better cycling in Europe. Chapeau to Karima Delli for helping to light the spark all the way back in June 2022, leading the Parliament's first ever pro-cycling parliamentary resolution in February 2023, and seeing this step completed today. The next step is to achieve full agreement with the Council and Commission, then adoption (foreseen in early April). 👉 What is the European Cycling Declaration? Many people talk about environmental factors in production, transport, development and much more. It is of course important that we consider these factors. But in my opinion it is also important to talk about durability in these times. Do you buy cheap/poor quality to throw away after a short time? Do you primarily buy things because of the current fashion and then buy new ones when the fashion changes and the product is no longer fashionable? or do you choose the classic design and the good quality so that it can last for a lifetime? https://lnkd.in/djPhaTu9

This is so good:
I love this new ad from the Dutch Government, encouraging citizens not to take their motor vehicles for short journeys. Even the Dutch, with their high levels of everyday cycling, still need to ensure cycling is promoted and backed by new infrastructure. #cycling #walking #activetravel #netherlands #cyclingindustry Tessel Van Essen Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the United Kingdom
