Protein diversification, what does it mean? - More plant-based food. This would also benefit farmers. - The right incentives through the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). - Addressing structural barriers through the creation of enabling food environments that make the healthy, sustainable choice the easy, available and affordable option. - Insects: a bad solution. Their welfare needs are largely unknown and the industry is mainly a feed industry that supports continued intensive farming. - Science-based discussions about cultivated meat, no more fear mongering and disinformation. Hot off the press! “a new page in the history of food" is being written! 🗞🦗 The Guardian has recently shared an article about the booming popularity of insect protein as a novel food source. NUTRINSECT SRL, an Italian agriculture company have gained approval for cricket flour to be sold around Italy 👏🏼 Jose Francesco Cianni, the chief executive of Nutrinsect, said: “a new page in the history of food has been opened - now that his nutrient-packed flour can be incorporated into an array of food items." With cricket protein being packed with a variety of vitamins, it is inherently clear that the acceptance of edible insects in Europe is growing exponentially. Yale School of the environment observes: "As regulatory hurdles fall, dozens of startups in Europe, some supported by E.U. grants, are betting on a growing market for edible insects. By 2030, their trade group claims, European companies will be churning out 1 million tons of insect-based animal feed yearly, and 390 million Europeans will be munching on some form of bug-based fare." The market for edible insects continues to expand both in the UK and EU so are you ready to embrace edible insects as a reliable food source offering you a sustainable food for the future! At what point would you be comfortable including them in your kids pack-up sandwich and snack bar lunch for school? What do you think about the business opportunities of plant meat? According to the Good Food Institute, the global artificial meat market will grow from $4.6 billion in 2018 to $85 billion by 2030 and $30.9 billion by 2026. Nowadays, not only plant-based meat, but also plant-based seafood are the new favorites of vegetables, and these alternative protein products will continue to capture people's taste buds as the world strives for a net-zero carbon reduction and a solution to the food crisis. As an alternative meat product, the development of plant-based meat industry is regarded as an important part of carbon reduction. According to FAO, the total carbon dioxide emissions from livestock farming worldwide account for 14.5% of all anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, with cattle accounting for the highest proportion, about 65% of the emissions from livestock farming. In addition, the carbon emissions from meat production are higher than the total carbon emissions from cars, boats, trains, airplanes, and so on. In addition, global population growth will continue to put pressure on the environment and may lead to a food crisis, with the global population likely to reach 8.5 billion by 2030, 9.7 billion by 2050, and over 10 billion by around 2058. We can expect significant advancements in plant breeding over the next 10 to 20 years. More than 90% of experts believe these innovations will lead to more resilient and productive crops, which is important given the ongoing challenges of climate change. These developments are crucial for addressing global food security as we face climate-related challenges. I really like that plant variety protection was mentioned to incentivize innovation and stimulate more investment into R&D around the world (Vietnam example). Let’s hope these efforts will make a meaningful difference. #FoodSecurity #Agriculture #SeedInnovation #ClimateChange #Plantbreeding #PVP and #PVP

🍽🌱💵 IT'S NEVER BEEN A BETTER TIME TO INVEST IN THE FUTURE OF FOOD From pollution and destruction to disease, the societal costs of livestock meat production are an incredible burden. In 2020, the average American ate almost 280 pounds of meat, a figure which is very likely higher today. Many European and Latin American countries, not to mention Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Hong Kong also eat a large amount of animal meat. In most industrialized nations, animal proteins are at the center of the average person’s breakfast, lunch, and dinner plate. But what of the costs to our collective health and environment? This past December, the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) released a paper showing that our food systems, which we know to be based on animal proteins, externalizes $12.7 trillion in costs to society. That is an estimated 10% of global GDP. The FAO paper, published during the UN climate conference COP28 where sustainable and healthy food systems advancements were part of the main programming for the first time, noted that 73% of the $12.7 trillion cost to society was due to dietary pattern-induced productivity losses. In laypeople’s terms, we pay for our addiction to meat and other processed foods in more ways than at the grocery store. There is a silver lining: investing in food system innovation. Per the UN Environment Programme, despite livestock farming accounting for up to 18% of global greenhouse gas emissions, agrifood tech funding accounts for only 4% of global climate investments. Now is the time to invest in what some might call a golden opportunity. BSC With hons in Horticulture|| Agri Influencer ||Communications Enthusiast || Owns a farm ‹Green Acre Farms›. Empowering Youth to shape the future of agriculture
Thrilled to attend #WorldFoodDay2024 under the theme "The Right to Food for a Better Life and a Better Future." As we celebrate today, it’s vital to remember the critical role our local farmers play in achieving food security and better nutrition for all. #WFD2024 To help meet this goal, I encourage our farmers to invest in planting fruit trees. Fruit trees not only provide nutritious food but also improve soil quality, enhance biodiversity, and offer a sustainable source of income. 🍎🍋🥭 In addition, poultry farming is a highly productive venture. Chickens provide both eggs and meat, improving dietary diversity and offering a steady source of income. With proper management, poultry can be a reliable way to improve family nutrition and livelihoods. 🐓🥚 By planting fruit trees and rearing poultry, farmers can build a more sustainable food system, providing for their families while contributing to local food security. Let’s empower our communities with the knowledge and resources needed to achieve these goals. 🌱💪 Together, we can ensure that no one is left behind in the journey toward food security and better nutrition. It starts with simple steps: planting fruit trees and investing in poultry farming. These actions not only improve food access but also create sustainable income streams for families. 🌳🐓 Local farmers can also take advantage of modern farming techniques like organic composting and water-efficient irrigation systems to further boost their yields while conserving resources. Every small effort counts in building a resilient food system. 🌿💧 With the right support, including access to training and financial resources, farmers can expand their operations, diversify crops, and integrate sustainable practices, leading to increased productivity and higher income. 🌾💼 As we celebrate #WorldFoodDay2024, let’s commit to empowering our farmers with the tools and knowledge they need to thrive. By investing in fruit trees, poultry farming, and sustainable practices, we can improve food security and nutrition for all. Together, we can ensure a better life and a better future. 💪🌍🍽️ I call on policymakers, organizations, and the private sector to continue supporting our farmers through funding, training, and creating favorable market conditions. Together, we can achieve sustainable growth in our agricultural sector. #WFD2024 Let’s act today for a food-secure tomorrow! 🌍🌱#FoodSecurity #SustainableAgriculture
