French food manufacturer Nutriset Group optimised its production line with Robotiq's Palletising Solution🦾 Manual post-Covid palletising posed major challenges for Nutriset. Keen to fully automate its production line, Nutriset faced obstacles such as inconclusive tests due to high payload requirements, limited space, low ceilings, heavy and oversized cartons, as well as pre-cuts on the cartons, which made the process even more complex. While initial trials were inconclusive, the breakthrough came with Robotiq's Palletising Solution paired with the UR20, which offered the necessary collaborative solution without the need for safety cages making it 100% collaborative. Nutriset found the ideal automation configuration to efficiently streamline its palletising process. Similar to the current global AI “frenzy” (or buzz :)), circularity enthusiasts will know about the current hype around deposit schemes for beverage containers across Europe (especially since the PPWR minimum requirements), but increasingly also globally… And rightfully so, as such schemes (called DRS in Europe, bottle bills in the US) typically boost the return rates of beverage containers to 80-95% in 2-3 years after the implementation. But that is not the focus of my post today - focus is how we design and implement them successfully! Since they are not as inovative as gen AI (first scheme for glass bottles was introduced in Sweden 150 years ago and today we have almost 50 countries with such schemes), we’ve had opportunities to observe right and wrong, plus at Roland Berger we’ve been supporting on the matter in more than 20 countries since 2003! To sum up the essential succes factors, they would be: 1. Timeline reasonability for roll out 2. Density of network and logistics excellence 3. Stakeholder alignment and right governance 4. As our process is based in #massproduction (plastic molding injection and metal bending/stamping) products are not treated individually and here is where the challenge is, how to check products by implementing 100% #sorting activity in fast and mass production with a very contained cost, flexible concept and easy to implement for several products. We have some experience with #camera control #inspection and #automated #feedingsystems. JPM Industry, within the scope of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) and particularly in the Produtech R3 Agenda, demonstrated today a new robotic palletization system for mixed products, called CrossLog, aimed at the logistics sector in the retail area, with the participation of Worten and Sonae. It is the result of the collaboration between several entities, namely INESC-TEC, SONAE, and WORTEN, which are part of WP9 of the Produtech R3 Agenda. During the demonstration, it was possible to observe how the solution efficiently and automatically handles the separation, organization, and palletization of products of different morphologies, weights, and dimensions, reducing manual effort and optimizing the supply chain. Key elements of the presentation included the use of advanced technologies such as real-time object recognition, mixed product mosaic generation algorithms, and robotic palletization systems, all integrated into a management and supervision platform. This solution not only improves operational efficiency but is also aligned with Industry 4.0 concepts. During the event there were also moments of interaction with participants, including a Q&A session, allowing a discussion of the advantages and challenges of implementing this technology. The project's success was largely attributed to the strong partnerships established with academic institutions, such as INESC-TEC, which contributed to the development of the scheduling systems and the mixed product mosaic generator.
