Some Things I Should've Known Before Moving to the UK as a Sonographer As a Nigerian Sonographer, there's a whole lot that I wish I knew before starting my practice in the UK as a sonographer. Because as with any type of information, the sooner you are made aware of it, the less likely you are to fall into any avoidable traps or mistakes. >>>I wish I knew that I could make some kind of mistakes in my UK ultrasound practice and it won't necessarily be the end of the world. Join us as he takes us through his journey to Ultra-X Imaging and shares what makes his job so rewarding. Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in Ultrasound? A: My sister inspired me to pursue a career in healthcare. From a young age, I knew that I wanted to help others but didn’t quite know how. Around that same time, my sister was going through nursing school, and seeing how she was able to make a difference inspired me to follow suit. I enrolled in an ultrasound program and have really enjoyed it ever since. Q: How did you come across Ultra-X Imaging? A: I came across Ultra-X Imaging towards the end of my clinical training. I had heard of mobile ultrasound and was interested in the opportunity. I started researching mobile imaging near me, and Ultra-X was one of the first companies to come up. I looked over their website and very quickly realized that this was an organization that I wanted to be a part of. Q: What do you love the most about working for Ultra-X Imaging? A: I love being a part of the culture and beliefs that Ultra-X Imaging is built on. The most important priority for me as an ultrasound technologist is the patient and making sure they get not only the care they need but quality care. I love that Ultra-X is passionate about that as well and affords its employees the ability to let it shine through their work. Q: What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? A: The most rewarding aspect of my job is the connections I form with my patients. With Ultra-X, I’m able to spend time getting to really talk with my patients and understand what they’re going through. Having worked in small and start-up practices, I was usually the radiographer, receptionist, and practice manager. Even though you don't have the resources to hire a full-time receptionist, you feel terrible that you have to choose between scanning patients, attending patients at the desk or answering the phone. We put Olivia in our practices to help us out with this. Patients who didn't want to wait could book with Olivia on the phone or online, and it gave me more time to spend with our patients. ☢️Alternative ways on how to become a Radiographer in the UK☢️ Apart from the straight-forward process obtaining a University bachelor’s degree in radiography, there are some other alternative routes that people in different circumstances could explore. If you have a background in another science or health care related course and would like to transition to becoming a radiographer, there are some post graduate accelerated courses available which you may be eligible to apply for. These usually last for about 2 years, after which you can apply to be a band 5 radiographer. These courses are subject to meeting certain eligibility criteria, so it’s worth checking with individual institutions to be certain. Also, some people start their professional journey as radiology assistants (band 2/3), after which they apply to start the assistant practitioner (band 4) training in the university. Then with a bridging course of about 6 months, and with the support of their employer, they could study to become qualified radiographers (band 5). What's frustrating is having organizational leaders in healthcare devalue the roles and skillsets of healthcare professionals. So I'd like to say this boldly, loudly and clearly: Sonography is NOT easy!!! We- the sonographers who worked tirelessly through school, who have spent years mastering our skills and improving our techniques- We make it look easy! When healthcare leaders tell other healthcare professionals that they can learn Sonography (quickly) and scan just as well as a trained sonographer, it diminishes the value that we Allied Health Professionals bring to the medical team. I'm making it a priority to educate the masses about the field of sonography.
