“Eric, what advice do you have if I want to pivot out of Higher Ed?” Someone once told me that my resume focused too much on the students and not on the business outcomes. A CEO who never worked on a college campus won’t be able to interpret all the work you did in business terms. Even if it was mission critical to the University and your role at the school. One of my greatest achievemente while working as an Area Coordinator was reinvigorating our annual Battle of the Buildings program. (I was even more impressed the year I convinced a group of upperclassmen to participate as the Off-Campus team - something never heard of before!) I worked tirelessly with our student Executive Board over the summer to pull of a major campus event on the weekend after move in. This event required meticulous planning, intense callaboration and cost a significant amount of money to pull off successfully. Did it impress my supervisors and my VP and the Cabinet? Sure! Are the specifics anywhere on my resume? No. Rather, I focus on the outcomes of taking on a major change management project to increase stakeholder participation and ROI to support ongoing department initiatives. I was highlighting my experience that HR professionals and business leaders understand. I don’t downplay my Higher Ed accomplishments. I just save the specifics for when my resume has earned me an interview - and I’m able to actively connect my student and residence hall work with the business in a live, in the moment and active way. I interpret my experience for them. Rather than counting on them to do it for me while reviewing my resume. I will proudly talk about this example - and it was a fun walk down memory lane from FOURTEEN YEARS AGO. Even though I’m pretty sure our team didn’t even come close to the top of the rankings. 😂 It’s just not something I put on my resume because it doesn’t translate to the career I’m trying to achieve. #highered #studentaffairs #careerpivot #resumeskills #hr #hrconsulting

Hi, I'm reposting this with the comments on, to get your feedback: A quick note about recruiting and preparing young adults for careers, otherwise know as job placement and retention. I recruited for Job Corps for 11 years and spent the 12th doing post training placement and retention. The latter involves informing employers about what the program does, how it does it, the standards that trainees must maintain as a baseline for success in the program. At the entry level, employers are still hiring for attitude and adaptability, since they know that they can new hires most of the skills the job will require. Companies care about their reputation, and if they are in a position to add or replace staff, then a reputation exists and needs to be maintained. Job Corps students understand this because we expect them to uphold the reputation of this program before we recommend them to an employer. Now, how do we recruit? We know we are harvesting from a vast pool of youth from all over America, many cities, towns and even rural areas. We explain to interested recruits and their families (support systems) that our standards cannot and will not be compromised. As such, we know that some young men and women won't be "fit" for the one to two year program, but our goal is make that understood at the outset, so as to maintain our program's quality, standards and reputation. A recruiter doesn't just process a young adult into the program, but we model, mentor and monitor from the very first contact. My expectation is that Job Corps career counselors, administrators, instructors and other support staff strive to display this standard to students throughout their stay. For those who buy into this model and integrate it into their career plan, we know they will be successful. I have seen thousands of such youth come through my office over the years and Job Corps continues to be among the premier programs giving youth a leg up toward

I am so excited to share the Pre-Conference Workshop I am helping to facilitate during the 2024 NACADA Region 2 Conference on Wednesday, April 3 from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM. "Take a Gamble on the Mid-Level Practitioner: Redefining the Profession" celebrates the mid-career professional in the field. In higher education, mid-level practitioners face challenges that affect them both personally and professionally. Some advisors seek advancement to the top, while others are happy in their roles as “helping professionals”. When promotions are unavailable to this group, it can be difficult to find appreciation in their jobs. In reality, when a vertical path is unavailable at an institution, it could be horizontal movements that afford the best opportunities for aiding in professional development. Join the conversation to learn how you can forge a rich, rewarding career independent of the conventional “climbing the ladder” approach and can engage in your own #HorizontalBranding on and off campus. Join us in this three hour pre-conference session that will include (1) review of the topic, (2) networking with fellow mid-level advisors (3) panel discussion from industry leaders and (4) career success planning to overcome your struggles and conquer your doubts! Our team includes - Brandon B., Bob Bullard, Deborah Coburn, Francesca Pugh-Opher, Ph.D., Keith Schweiger, Kathie Sindt, Claude Taylor, and Julie Traxler There is still time to sign up -- We are P2. https://lnkd.in/eXnp8iqR
