Achieving More Together: A Year of Impact, Innovation, and Care In 2024, CareFlight has remained committed to the health and wellbeing of the communities we serve. We’ve delivered over 7,000kg of fresh fruit to remote communities across the Top End, helping ensure access to essential nutrients where it’s needed most. This initiative is just one part of our ongoing mission to support healthier, stronger communities. Beyond providing lifesaving medical care, we’re proud to deliver essential resources that can help improve health outcomes in these remote areas. Every day, we fly into several remote communities to treat and transport critically ill and injured patients, and we’re always looking for new ways to make a difference in the lives of those we serve. A heartfelt thank you to the Woolworths team for their invaluable support in making this possible. Woolworths Supermarkets

New in JTLU: “Spatiotemporal patterns of online food delivery services before the Covid-19 pandemic” by Steven Gehrke, Michael Huff, Brendan Russo, and Edward Smaglik, all of Northern Arizona University. https://lnkd.in/gFC2xq2e Public health concerns of the Covid-19 pandemic and the popularity of on-demand mobility services have led to a recent and prominent increase in online food delivery—and increased impacts on urban transportation networks and landscapes. By analyzing route-level data collected by a ride-hailing driver assistant app between October 2015–2019, this study informs a baseline understanding of where and when these on-demand food delivery services were used within the Phoenix metro area prior to the pandemic.

Several factors, particularly in remote Queensland, impact food security and consequently the health outcomes for families and communities. Geographic isolation, long supply chains, harsh climatic conditions and reduced economic development opportunities make equitable access to healthy food particularly difficult. Supermarkets play a crucial role to food security for remote Queensland and offer a real opportunity to enhance the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Most remote Queensland communities rely on just one supermarket, usually more expensive, with lower quality and less varied options compared to other parts of the state. This disparity fuels diet-related inequities among remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. This needs to change. Health and Wellbeing Queensland's Deputy CEO Gemma Hodgetts, Director of Equity and Communities Simone Nalatu, Senior Public Health Nutritionist Renae Earle and Health Practitioner Jessica Powell were invited to appear at a public hearing last week for the Supermarket Pricing Select Committee’s Inquiry into supermarket pricing. This was an important opportunity to promote the change we are driving. Through Gather + Grow 2023 – 2032, we will improve and sustain food security in remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities through a combination of local and whole-of-system actions. We also know that variability in supermarket offerings and pricing across the state is not just a cost-of-living issue, it is health issue. We're thankful for the chance to highlight the importance of equitable access to healthy food for all Queenslanders and to advocate for positive change. Ensuring reliable access to affordable, fresh, and nutritious food helps to give Queenslanders the best chance to live a healthier life, no matter who they are, or where they live. A recent investigation by CHOICE reveals that grocery prices in some remote Indigenous communities are more than double those found in Australia’s major cities. In a comparison of 9 essential grocery items, the average cost was $44.70 across Woolworths, Coles, Aldi, and IGA stores in urban areas. In four remote communities, however, the same basket averaged a staggering $99.38, with the highest recorded price being $110.82 in the Northern Territory’s West Daly region. Access to affordable, nutritious food should be a right for all Australians, regardless of location. However, this investigation sheds light on the severe food insecurity and the excessively high costs many remote Indigenous communities face. For example, while apples in urban centers average $4.87 per kilogram, shoppers in West Daly pay a steep $9.10 for the same item. In response to these findings, CHOICE, alongside other organizations, is pushing for stronger government action on food security to address the inequalities affecting remote Indigenous communities. We encourage further support for this cause and will continue to keep advocates updated on this important effort. Instead of wasting 6 months and half a billion dollars Albanese would have had a better outcome in health and life spans for indigenous people.

🚨 Why aren’t we looking after the people who look after us? 🏥 In hospitals—the very places meant to heal and protect our health—too often the food available is low quality, heavily processed, and packed with artificial ingredients. It’s not just wrong; it’s an injustice. 🩺 Healthcare workers dedicate their lives to saving others, yet many are left with little more than vending machine snacks or heavily processed meals to fuel their long shifts. A recent study found that 74% of doctors skip meals due to lack of time, and when they do eat, the options are often far from nourishing. At Frive, we believe artificial, low-quality food made by companies prioritising profits over health has no place in society—especially not in hospitals. That’s why we’re proud to continue our initiative, providing free Frive meals to hospital staff across London every month. This is in addition to our partnership with the Blue Light Card, offering an always-on discount to emergency service workers. 💡 If you know anyone working in a central London hospital, tag them below or get in touch — let's make sure they don't have to settle for vending machine 'meals'. Together, let’s show our gratitude with real, nourishing food. #NaturalHealthyEating #PublicHealth

How would you feel if you had to pay $7 for a can of soup or $11 for a tin of spam? This is the reality of the cost of living in First Nations communities where people can pay up to $110.82 for a basket of basic groceries, compared to an average of $44.70 in capital cities. It's time to close the gap so everyone can access healthy food at a fair price. 🥬Big news!🥬UK hospitals trialling more plant-based foods in hospital meals - in not one, but two big developments! 1) In 37 UK hospitals, Sodexo and Nuffield Health are partnering with Greener by Default to run a trial of more plant-based defaults in hospital meals - that is, making plant-based meals the default option for patients to increase uptake of healthy sustainable food, but people still have the option to switch to a meat dish if they want to. If successful, this could provide a blueprint for all UK hospitals. 2) Plant-Based Health Professionals UK revealed last week that over 10 UK Hospitals had expressed an interest in working with Greener by Default to implement plant-based defaults. Last year, as part of the Plant-First Healthcare campaign, 24 healthcare orgs with 1 million+ members called on all UK hospitals to serve plant-based meals as the default option - Feedback were proud supporters of this. There's already proof this can be done: in 2022, all 11 hospitals in New York made plant-based meals the default - the results are incredible: 🍎1.2 million plant-based meals have now been served 🍎This cut carbon emissions by 36% 🍎Cost savings were 59 cents per meal 🍎Satisfaction rate over 90%. What do you think of the news? Will post links to more info in the comments. #food #meat #plantbased #lessandbettermeat #climatechange #climatecrisis #biglivestock #defundbiglivestock
