It was a great evening for our team last night as our Major Trauma Rehabilitation Programme won the Most Effective Contribution to Integrated Health and Care awards at the #HSJPartnershipAwards. This ground-breaking programme is positively impacting the lives of patients across Manchester, including Paul, a survivor of the Manchester Arena Bombing, and Susan who was hit by a car when it mounted the pavement during a police chase. You can read their stories here: https://lnkd.in/enQggZJV A huge congratulations to our team at Manchester Institute of Health & Performance - Nuffield Health and our partners at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust, The University of Manchester, and The University of Salford. Dr Jason Wong, at the University of Manchester, said: “I’m truly proud of the team and delighted that our Major Trauma Enhanced Rehabilitation service has won at this year’s HSJ Partnership awards. There are many people and stakeholders to thank behind the scenes for this award, but a depth of gratitude goes out to the participants, who are survivors of major life changing trauma, for inspiring us to do this work.” Congratulations to all the other winners on the night! This event was a fantastic showcase of the power of partnership between the NHS and the independent sector.

Women have been a fundamental part of healthcare in the UK for centuries - from pioneering medical breakthroughs to providing dedicated frontline care. Their contributions have helped shaped the industry, driving innovation and improving patient outcomes. This Saturday marks International Women’s Day, and this year’s theme, "Accelerate Action," aligns perfectly with Nuffield Health’s mission to build a healthier nation. This year, we are marking this day with the launch of our Women’s Network Leadership Forum—a dedicated space to champion equality, inclusivity, and personal development. NHS staff dedicate their careers to caring for others - but often need support for their own health. That’s why Nuffield Health is working in partnership with the NHS to offer our transformative Joint Pain Programme to NHS staff, helping those with chronic conditions stay healthy and in work. Reversing the rise in economic inactivity due to ill health is a national priority and our partnership with the NHS addresses this critical challenge. Musculoskeletal conditions - often invisible but deeply debilitating - are the second leading cause of absence among NHS staff. Low-impact structured exercise, delivered by our incredible Rehabilitation Specialists, can help people manage pain, stay active, and return to work. To date, we’ve supported 35,000 people through our Joint Pain Programme and following today’s announcement by the Government, we’re launching the first phase of our partnership to unlock 4,000 additional places on the programme for NHS staff. By working together, we can tackle health-related absence, strengthen the NHS workforce, and support the future of healthcare for everyone. https://lnkd.in/eqGJcNuA #buildingahealthiernation #healthcareheroes

New Knees for Skis! ⛷️ We were delighted to hear from one of our former patients, retired ski instructor Richard Eklof, about his remarkable progress. With 40 years of rugby and 50 years of skiing under his belt, Richard’s knees had experienced significant ware and tear. After struggling with knee pain for 6 years, he opted for knee replacement surgery at Nuffield Health Cardiff & Vale Hospitals. Within two years he’d had both knees replaced, returning to the Austrian slopes just four months after his last surgery, thanks to the minimally invasive Stryker Mako procedure – a robotic-assisted technique with a more precise implant placement and much quicker recovery. Richard's story speaks to the incredible advances in surgical techniques, the dedication and professionalism of our healthcare professionals, and his own determination. As Heart Health Month comes to a close, we spoke to one of our cardiology patients, Eric Waters, about his incredible story. Retirement didn’t slow Eric down—he took up cycling, even tackling the Himalayas at 18,500 feet. While taking part in the English Cathedrals Cycle Ride, what seemed like a routine rest stop, turned into a life-threatening event. With no warning signs, Eric suffered a cardiac arrest. After 20 minutes of unsuccessful revival attempts, Eric woke up in the hospital. Eric was diagnosed with severe aortic stenos (the narrowing of the aortic valve), a hereditary condition that required urgent valve replacement. Under the care of consultant Mr. Kalyana Javangula at Nuffield Health Leeds Hospital, Eric underwent open-heart surgery, giving him a long-term solution and a path back to normal life. With the support of Nuffield Health’s rehabilitation physiotherapy, Eric was back in the hospital gym after just eight weeks. During recovery, he noticed irregularities in his heart rate and was subsequently diagnosed with atrial flutter, a common post-surgery condition. After a successful cardioversion and 10 more weeks of rehab, he was signed off with the confidence to continue with his life and exercise. Now, 18 months on from his surgery, Eric is back to cycling 100-mile rides in a day! Mr Waters adds: “Mr. Javangula and everyone at Nuffield Hospital Leeds have been wonderful. I have been treated so well all the way through my journey here. It is a traumatic time, and it's difficult, but if you have the motivation and want to succeed, you can—especially with the help of the healthcare team, who are always there to support you. Now, I want to complete the English Cathedrals Cycle Ride, as I've got another 36 cathedrals to visit!!” #Cardiac #Hearthealth #Buildingahealthiernation
