Grenfell 7 Years Anniversary: A CALL TO ACTION Seven years ago, the Grenfell Tower fire claimed 72 lives, a tragedy rooted in preventable failures. Today, The Property Institute (TPI) stands with survivors and the community, urging the next Government to urgently address building safety. The next Government must rise to the occasion and commit to proactive, tangible measures that prioritize human life and safety above all else. This includes tackling implementation issues, overcoming slow progress, removing bureaucratic obstacles, and revisiting amendments to the Building Safety Act. We need to fully fix unsafe buildings and protect residents from unnecessary costs. As stated in our Manifesto: https://bit.ly/4aWYp5u – we need to finish the job of fixing unsafe buildings. Progress has been made with the Building Safety Act 2022, but many residents remain at risk. It's time for decisive action. In the aftermath of the Grenfell tragedy, new regulations mean that for high-rise and other multi-occupancy residential buildings, clear and current information that can aid life-saving efforts must be housed within a Secure Information Box (SIB) that adheres to stringent specifications, and which is easily accessible in an emergency. But what does ‘easily accessible’ mean? Ask any fire officer and they’ll tell you that it needs to be in the most logical and obvious location for the fire brigade when they attend. And that is often at the main entrance door. Guidance says: • It should be in a clear unobstructed area accessible for Fire & Rescue Services; • It should be in close proximity to other systems or equipment that may be used e.g. rising main inlets etc; • It can be located internally or externally but in a well-lit area; • If located internally in a room, then it must have 24/7 staffing to provide quick and easy access for the Fire Services with directional signage to highlight its exact location. The 5 key messages they will be delivering are: 👉🏻 The outdated framework for funding of NFM needs rebalancing. NFM is a different approach, that is cost effective and value for money 👉🏻 Implementation of Schedule 3 of the FWMA for England ASAP, ensuring all new developments have to include SuDS 👉🏻The need for the development of green skills and expertise. NFM officers should be present in all Local Authorities 👉🏻 Education is key for long term understanding and success. This should be part of the primary school curriculum 👉🏻 NFM and SuDS have a positive impact on Combined Sewer Outfalls (CSO) and should be prioritised by OFWAT / funded by water companies. Automatic right to combined sewer connection should be removed.
