Scientists could gain access to higher-than-ever-resolution maps of global carbon dioxide and methane within the decade thanks to a proposed Caltech-led project on which Carnegie Science’s Anna M. Michalak is deputy principal investigator. The Carbon Investigation, or Carbon-I, was recently named by NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration as one of four finalists for upcoming space missions; the two winning projects will be announced next year and will launch in 2030 and 2032.

Summary – NASA has launched a new satellite, dubbed PACE, under its earth sciences program. Its name is an acronym for Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, and ocean Ecosystem satellite mission. It was sent into space from Cape Canaveral by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. NASA’s goal is to observe phytoplankton in the oceans, which are important to Earth’s carbon cycle. These phytoplankton are critical to Earth’s food chain. Currently, global warming is having adverse impacts on them, and NASA is using this new satellite so that further research might be conducted on how to prevent harm and provide aid to the carbon system in the future most effectively. It utilizes hyperspectral technology, which monitors ocean color to determine the amounts of phytoplankton in certain areas. Takeaways – The carbon cycle provides crucial stability to the atmosphere and to the air we breathe. Being able to monitor the phytoplankton which contribute heavily to the wellbeing of the atmosphere and the health of the environment. This technology will allow for this monitoring to increase on a large scale. Implication—The ability to monitor phytoplankton allows for greater amounts of preventative measures to be taken towards global warming in the future. If NASA is able to effectively identify which parts of the ocean require the greatest focus in restoring phytoplankton to aid the environment, businesses can capitalize off of this information by taking their own action and marketing this aid to the public. Larger space firms such as Blue Origin or SpaceX might also be able to replicate NASA’s technologies and profit off of them. https://lnkd.in/gAY4PF6N

"Earlier this week, the European Union's Earth #science team came out with its analysis of 2023's global #temperatures, finding it was the warmest year on record to date. In an era of #globalwarming, that's not especially surprising. What was unusual was how 2023 set its record—every month from June on coming in far above any equivalent month in the past—and the size of the gap between 2023 and any previous year on record. The Copernicus dataset used for that analysis isn't the only one of the sort, and on Friday, Berkeley Earth, #NASA, and the NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration all released equivalent reports. And all of them largely agree with the EU's: 2023 was a record, and an unusual one at that. So unusual that NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration's chief #climate scientist, Gavin Schmidt, introduced his look at 2023 by saying, "We're frankly astonished." Despite the overlaps with the earlier analysis, each of the three new ones adds some details that flesh out what made last year so unusual." (...)

I love my work, bringing research to the centre of our Parliament. This morning Australian Council of Learned Academies (ACOLA) collaborated with the Australian Parliament to facilitate another presentation in our long term briefing series, this time on #geoengineering and #climateengineering by Prof Rosemary Rayfuse. She is a Fellow of one of ACOLA's five members, the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia. As stated by Riley Duren, NASA , ‘Geoengineering is not a cure. At best it’s a Band-aid or tourniquet; at worst, it could be a self-inflicted wound.’ This was a fascinating discussion about the emerging technologies being explored as part of the mix of possible climate actions. While we need to explore all pathways, we need to be realistic that reducing emissions is the key and primary action needed and that there are very likely high costs and unintended consequences of these technologies if we don't understand and carefully regulate them globally. This is an excellent example of techno-optimism, when we have a complex problem and other options seem unpalatable, costly etc so look to technology. This is very much the case with climate action given how reliant we are on fossil fuels and the complex and wide societal changes we need to progress. Importantly, ACOLA does not necessarily support geoengineering as a policy and climate tool, this seminar was to help improve understandings for policy makers #carbondioxideremoval #solarradiationmanagement #scicomm #netzero #netzerotransition #netzerocarbon

Big News for Climate Action at #COP28! Exciting news from the climate front! At #COP28, NASA and other US agencies launched the U.S. Greenhouse Gas Center to make climate data accessible to everyone This online hub is a treasure trove of information on greenhouse gas sources, sinks, emissions, and fluxes Here's how it works: Think of it as a one-stop shop for climate data! The Center features datasets from various sources, including NASA's cutting-edge technology ?. For example, the EMIT mission on the International Space Station uses an imaging spectrometer to detect methane gas emissions on Earth This is crucial data for tracking and managing greenhouse gas levels! Why it matters: "The U.S. Greenhouse Gas Center aims to accelerate collaboration through Earth science data," says Argyro Kavvada, Center program manager at NASA HQ. This means getting the right data into the right hands Scientists, policymakers, and even YOU can use this information to understand and address climate change ? Let's all be part of the solution! Head over to the U.S. Greenhouse Gas Center (link to be added when available) and explore the data. Together, we can make informed decisions for a healthier planet #ClimateChange #USGreenhouseGasCenter #NASA #Science #EarthScience #Collaboration #Data #Solutions #ActOnClimate

ETH researchers show that as the Earth's #IceMelt's, #ClimateChange will change the axis Earth's #AxisOfRotation and the length of the day, affecting the speed of rotation previously determined by the Moon. 🌎 In brief ◼️ The Earth’s axis of rotation is shifting due to climate change and movements in the Earth’s interior. The corresponding #PolarMotion is triggered by shifts in mass such as the melting of polar #IceCaps. ◼️ For the first time, researchers at ETH Zurich have been able to fully explain the various causes of long-term polar motion in the most comprehensive modelling to date, using #AI methods. ◼️ Their model and their observations show that climate change and #GlobalWarming will have a greater influence on the Earth's rotational speed than the effect of the moon, which has determined the increase in the length of the day for billions of years.
