There are 3 stages to a stress response. The first one is called the Alarm Phase and lasts less than an hour. But Mother Nature was brilliant and knew where there was one alarm, another might be not be too far behind, so only about 80% of your body goes back into rest and digest. That other 20% stays hyper-vigilant, just in case. If, after a couple of hours have past and there’s no new alarm, your body will chill out and get back into full rest and digest mode. Enter modern life. 👀😵💫 If you have a stressful job, or deal with intense traffic, or have a rough relationship, or have a short fuse from some unaddressed traumas, or even keep your phone on, social media flowing with a 24-hour news cycle in the background: you’re hitting that alarm button again and again and again, which is why you’re not getting fully back into rest and digest and your body is in constant fight or flight mode, leaving you dysregulated and ultimately, depleted.
