I tried everything I could think of to help my son, but nothing seemed to work. I was at my wits' end and knew I needed a fresh perspective. So, I decided to buck convention. Rather than trying to control or change their behavior, I focused on understanding and dealing with it. Plenty of people thought it was a waste of time. That I was going down a long, slow road to nowhere. Yet years later, Eric chose recovery in 2018. Our relationship has blossomed since then, and we’re closer than ever. I received an email this week that broke me. I was scheduled to speak with a team at 7:30 AM about patient experience, but something I can't describe prompted a last-minute change. Instead, I decided to focus on Fueling and Refueling Compassion through Gratitude. I began the discussion by addressing a crucial issue: Compassion Fatigue. We explored the human cost of compassion fatigue/emotional exhaustion, including the tragic reality of caregiver suicide. I emphasized to everyone, "𝘐𝘵'𝘴 𝘖𝘒 𝘵𝘰 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘣𝘦 𝘖𝘒, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘪𝘵'𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘖𝘒 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘺." and "𝘠𝘰𝘶'𝘳𝘦 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘢𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘦." We also discussed resources available for anyone experiencing thoughts of self-harm. The second part of the discussion focused on gratitude. I've given this talk numerous times and as a presenter or public speaker, regardless of the topic, you always hope the right words reach the right people who need them most. The next morning, I received the email that stopped me in my tracks: "...𝘐 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘭𝘦𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘢𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘮𝘦𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘺𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘥𝘢𝘺. 𝘖𝘯𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘮𝘺 𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘰𝘺𝘦𝘦𝘴 𝘤𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘢𝘪𝘥 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘬𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵...𝘴𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘢𝘴𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱. 𝘚𝘩𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘥𝘦𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘧 𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧-𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘮..." I just stopped. I read and re-read it with tears flowing down my cheeks. I felt immense sadness for this caregiver who was suffering. I felt grateful for the opportunity to speak to that team and for the decision to change the topic. I was profoundly thankful to the leader who fostered an environment where this caregiver felt safe to say, "𝘐 𝘢𝘮 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘖𝘒. 𝘐 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱." Thanks to that leader, the caregiver was connected with an Employee Assistance Team and is beginning to receive the help she needs. This experience further solidifies a vital truth: 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗲 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹-𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀. For my network, I know this is not a work topic however the health of our families is a topic everyone can relate to. Please help me find a few special mothers who are open to sharing their stories... Trigger warning: Mothers who’ve experienced addiction and / or attempted or completed suicide of a child, I want to hear your story. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * If you are a mother who has weathered the storm of addiction or the heartbreak of a suicide attempt or loss, I invite you to join this powerful initiative. Your story, your voice, and your resilience can make a profound difference in the lives of others who need to know that they are not alone. I am looking for 11 mothers who would be open to sharing their stories of the struggles of addiction and the heartbreak of suicide attempts or loss within their own families. I plan to do a podcast style interview to first record our stories and then publish as a series. Mothers if you have a child who’s survived their suicide attempt and would like to share, they are welcome along with siblings who may want to share. In my own journey through this experience that I never wanted, I found myself struggling with things that you aren’t supposed to have to feel or ask about yourself or your child. Why did they do this? How did I not know? How could I have not seen this coming? What do I do now? Did I cause this? What did I do wrong? What about the surviving siblings? And grief, how do you grieve when nothing makes sense? How do you move on when there is no closure? How do you care for everyone else while you’re grieving? This stained old coffee pot has done more to end suffering, to fight alcoholism and addiction, to give kids their parents back, parents their children back, communities their members back and addicts and alcoholics like me their lives back, than the ENTIRE War on Drugs has. That’s not hyperbole. The amount of healing that takes place around coffee pots just like this all over the world can’t be quantified or measured, but to ANYONE who has ever had a bit of fellowship with a fellow broken human over a cup of coffee from one of these pots will say the same thing I just did. Bureaucracy doesn’t end suffering. Laws don’t create healing. Governments don’t make things better. Community does.  Human connection does. Shared trust over a shared trauma does. Storytelling does. And service does. If you’re struggling today, there’s a solution out there.  You’re not as unique as you believe you are.  What works for us will work for you. Unfortunately, pain holds a vital place in our journey towards sobriety and ultimately, serenity. Recently my sobriety network has been shadowed by immense sorrow, mourning the loss of individuals to suicide, stemming from a refusal or inability to recover. Such tragedies are a reminder of the lethality of alcohol. Alcohol causes death through poisoning, cancer, car accidents, heart failure, liver damage, violence, and so much more. The journey to sobriety is invariably marked by pain and emotional turmoil. This is essential for breaking down the denial and confronting the reality of our disease, but it is also the very thing that blocks us from seeking and accepting the help we need. The painful realization typically comes in the face of potential loss—of health, relationships, family, or life itself. The path from pain to sobriety is not linear or swift. It requires a daily commitment to live happy, joyous, and free. There is a living amends that we make with ourselves, in addition to others, to reconcile the harm we've caused to our body, mind, and emotional well-being. We make daily choices that reflect our dedication to sobriety and our commitment to become a better version of ourselves. Through acts of kindness and understanding others along with self-respect, we gradually repair what has been broken by our addiction.
