We are now accepting abstracts! Considering submitting your project to Viewfinder, an #NAEA publication on museum education and social justice. Viewfinder is currently accepting abstracts and proposals for Issue 19, which will focus on the theme of Co-creation in Practice. Co-creation is a strategy rooted in the idea of community and serves as a method of decolonizing museums. This practice is especially important when it entails giving voice to individuals who are typically marginalized within these institutions. Issue 19 of Viewfinder centers around the various obstacles and achievements encountered in the process of co-creation in museum education practice. We invite museum education professionals, scholars, and students at all levels to submit an abstract or proposal centered around the concepts of co-creation in museum education, with a focus on social justice. The deadline for submission is July 7, 2024. Viewfinder is an online publication focused on the intersection of museum education and social justice from the National Art Education Association’s Museum Education Division. Founded over 30 years ago, Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) revolutionized art education by prioritizing viewers' observations and interpretations over contextual information about artworks. Yet, questions have arisen in recent years regarding its alignment with equity, diversity, and inclusion in art education, raising concerns about its compatibility with anti-racist teaching methods. In this article, three VTS coaches and seasoned museum educators examine the balance between healing and harm in museum education incorporating VTS. They start with a quick overview of VTS's history and principles, then delve into its role in the evolving museological landscape of late 20th century American museums. The article discusses both the constraints and possibilities of VTS within liberating pedagogies, offering insights into its complexities. It read, “How to solve a problem in 5 simple steps!” Shaun the sheep giving Ray Dalio some competition         1. EXPLAIN the problem. 2. THINK of ideas to solve it. 3. CHOOSE the one you think is best. 4. TRY it out! 5. EVALUATE it (and retry?)

I could not agree more with these teachers and SAAM! Incorporating works of art and arts-based teaching practices into any classroom can be so powerful. Art education is about so much more than drawing or art-making. Teaching students to look through art is so powerful. As one of the teachers in the video says, it helps "strengthen that [visual literacy] muscle." We need that in every subject area. Our team has been seeing evidence of this already in our research into middle school science teachers incorporating artwork and arts-based practices as a way to build data literacy skills. We're only at the mid-point of testing, but our teachers have noticed expansion of students' observational skills, critical thinking about data, questioning, and self-confidence among learners who aren't the usual "science kids." I don't want to call it magic, because it is rooted it a lot of scholarship, theory, training, and careful technique. This was such an important article from Stephanie Downey and Amanda Krantz (I can't believe it's been 2 years!) -- and we should be doing more to show the continued harm being done to museum educators as museum directors expect more & more from a smaller staff. The pressure for more visitors, more programs, new forms of engagement, new community partnerships, more events, etc. continues, yet museums have failed to hire the staff needed to support this growth (or pay museum educators the proper wage/salary for their expanded work). I'm seeing extreme burnout across the field, and so many incredible folks in education continue to leave museums for other jobs. No one is listening to them when they talk about their overwork and the urgent need to slow things down. And many are afraid to even mention their burnout for fear of being fired, looked upon as a failure, or even passed by when a rare promotion opportunity comes along. It is a crisis within museums that will far outlive the COVID pandemic. And the saddest part is that it doesn't have to be this way. Any museum can begin right now to listen to their educators, value the work being done and the people doing it, right-size the levels of programming and visitor engagement, prioritize the hiring of additional staff, and take steps today to address long-standing pay inequities. Change is possible, and we're the ones that can & must build a better future for museums.
