Thank you to Cathryn Greville for bringing this video to my attention. All credit and thanks to Suzanne Wertheim, Ph.D. for writing and sharing these words below. I like how Suzanne summarises the attention to detail in the video. When is a pilot not a pilot? Apparently when she is giving testimony to a male state senator. In just one sentence, the senator was inappropriate in THREE different ways. And now his name (Gene Dornink) and the video of him being inappropriate are EVERYWHERE. I'll break it down as a linguist and inclusive-language expert. ____ Pilot: "My name is Laurie Haynor and I'm a Minnesota resident and Minneapolis-based pilot for Delta Airlines." State senator: "Then, Miss Haynor, is that correct, so can you tell me what a typical work week looks like for you as a stewardess?" ____ Oof. Three big problems here in one short sentence. I'll start small and work my way up. 1. Stewardess. Nope! We say flight attendant now. Because stewardess is grammatically feminine with that -ess ending, but plenty of flight attendants aren't women. Just like fireman has moved to firefighter, stewardess has moved to flight attendant. 2. Miss. Mayyyybe ok but probably not. In my book I talk about the "respect gap," where women are often called by first name while a male colleague is called Mr. or Dr. or similar. Miss is the lowest respect term we use for female people, and it's often used for girls. I suspect she should have been called Captain Haynor. But if not, Ms. would be more respectful and less girlish. 3. "As a stewardess." Dude! This woman told you literally seconds ago that she is a pilot. This move from pilot to stewardess is a great example of what I named an "unconscious demotion" back in 2015. A person doesn't fit the prototype for a job. So someone meeting them for the first time looks at them and assumes they can't possibly hold that job. Female doctors are assumed to be nurses. Black lawyers are assumed to be criminal defendants. And female pilots are assumed to be flight attendants. It's disrespectful, and exposes biased mental models. This state senator looked at woman, in a pilot's uniform, testifying as a pilot, who said she was a pilot and COULD NOT COMPREHEND SHE WAS A PILOT. I have identical examples involving Black female doctors, in lab coats, doing doctor things, and not recognized as doctors. Embarrassing for him. And frustrating and humiliating for the millions of people who get unconsciously demoted like this at work all the time. I have a whole section of my book devoted to unconscious demotions and barely scratched the surface. So! With just one sentence, you can say things that make you go viral in all the wrong ways. Have people regard you as out of date, as misogynist, as not in touch with reality.

Thought of the day …Power of #Collective efforts !! As a #seafarer , I have witnessed the crucial role of Collective Efforts . It is the seamless integration of #Trust, #Care, and #Respect amongst crew members. Trust serves as the foundation, enabling individuals to have confidence in their colleagues' skills and intentions. Care cultivates a supportive atmosphere where crew members are genuinely invested in each other's well-being and success. Respect ensures that everyone's contributions are valued, regardless of rank or background, fostering #inclusivity and appreciation. These elements create a synergy that transcends individual efforts, propelling the crew towards shared objectives with unity and efficiency. In the absence of trust, care, and respect, organizations risk falling into a pattern of "parallel play," where individuals work alongside each other but fail to genuinely collaborate. Often, people and organizations overlook this occurrence, as they are preoccupied with their own responsibilities and neglect interdependency and shared success. Onboard a vessel, collective efforts goes beyond accomplishing tasks; it is about nurturing relationships based on mutual understanding and empathy, driving collective achievement in the challenging #maritime #environment. #6000strong

🎬 Feature Friday: A Few Good Men Set in the military environment of the U.S. Navy, "A Few Good Men" is about two U.S. Marines who are court-martialed for the death of a fellow Marine. Lawyers Lt. Daniel Kaffee, Lt. Cmdr. JoAnne Galloway, and Lt. Sam Weinberg are tasked with defending them. The hierarchy, discipline, and chain of command within the military is central to the plot, as the lawyers attempt to uncover a potential conspiracy involving a "Code Red" (an unofficial disciplinary action). 🔴 -The movie showcases the strict adherence to rules, regulations, and established procedures that are characteristic of a hierarchy culture. The command structure and the importance of following orders, even at the potential expense of individual morality, play a significant role in the narrative. The scene below features Jack Nicholson as Col. Nathan R. Jessep's with the famous line, "You can't handle the truth!" This underscores the conflict between the rigidity of the hierarchical system and the individual's quest for truth and justice. In essence, "A Few Good Men" delves deep into the benefits and pitfalls of a hierarchical system, especially when the value of order and chain of command clashes with individual ethics and moral responsibility. The movie portrays how, in a strictly structured environment, the stability and internal focus of the hierarchy can sometimes overshadow the right course of action. Can these ever be 'balanced' - or how can we provide lessons in critical thinking, while also ensuring good order and discipline and the willingness to make sacrifices in line with Air Force values like "service before self"? https://lnkd.in/dmUUZpii If you want an experience that will challenge you and bend your mind in all different directions, hook up with us over at Project Mercury Innovators Forum - or apply to Cohort 12 launching this January in Washington, D.C. https://projectmercury.us/

W. Ethan Eagle, this is timeless. Thank you for sharing. Another clip worth considering is from Crimson Tide (linked below). There is cultural risk in being overly top down and bureaucratic even / especially in a crisis-- Patton's "A good plan violently executed now is better than a perfect plan executed next week" has an operational logic like Col Jessup's. The crux is context and the wisdom to know the difference. https://lnkd.in/gnrZ4zqp

LEADERS Leader-Managers and workers must effectively manage people, personnel, law suit, and business reputation RISK 24/7 realizing that everthing on a modern airplanes may be recorded. Nonetheless, this airline critical incident happened because of incompetent LEADERSHIP where a preliminary investigation was never attempted! Know that I served 30 years as a USAF Security Policem and I never saw or hear about anything like this simply because discipline and accountability are REAL in the USAF! However, training cannot alter the ‘heart and mind’, which is something people must remember and understand. Nevertheless, now the non-mentioned airline will be sued for millions, which could include the Feds and the local police department. Again, organizations must take POLICY training seriously thereby insuring every employee receives ancillary training at least quarterly via online education platforms. However, I would have never touched the ice delivered to my children by this man! PS: I personally have always been treated with dignity and respect on airlines. Maybe even nicer than others, and I normally sit in COACH. Thus, it appeared this was a planned activity! NOTE: Someome must always record these real world scenarios. **Maybe that guy was not a Broncos fan!
