We embrace never ending self-perpetuating mental illness — it’s our birthright! Note how well liked this article is and how every comment doubles down on it. Not one comment picks up on this element of article: “While many grow to be secure adults. . .” How, for God’s sake, do the children of mentally challenged parents pull that off? Tell me — have things always been this bad? If not, why are they getting worse? Here are highlights from the Pew mental health crisis report. [Guess who authored it — Thomas Insel, past director of NIMH, for a dozen years (he quit in 2015). This report says we can improve our mental health. Wasn’t that Insel’s job? Now he tell us he knows how to fix things! See https://lnkd.in/eUY4Nf4b Pew mental health crisis report: https://lnkd.in/e9N4-dVd] “Young people are contending with anxiety, jails have become de facto mental health centers, and deaths are rising from drug overdoses. Our nation is facing a new public health threat. Accelerated but not solely caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, feelings of anxiety and depression have grown to levels where virtually no one can ignore what is happening. A CNN/Kaiser Family Foundation poll put a number to it: 90% of Americans feel we are in a mental health crisis. A report in JAMA Health Forum has noted that 38% more people are in mental health care since the onset of the pandemic than before. And an unprecedented White House report from earlier this year begins, “Our nation is facing a mental health crisis among people of all ages, and the COVID-19 pandemic has only made these problems worse.” In truth, we are facing three distinct crises, which partially overlap. There is the youth mental health crisis, highlighted in an advisory from the surgeon general. There is a crisis around serious mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, contributing to social problems including homelessness and incarceration. And there is the ongoing substance use disorder (SUD) or addiction crisis, fueled by prescription opiates such as oxycontin but complicated by new, lethal drugs such as fentanyl. These three crises have somewhat different drivers, but the remarkable and hopeful truth is that we have solutions to resolve each of them if we have the will to embrace them.” Thank God! Go get ‘em Tom!
About a quarter of children are raised by a parent with a mental illness. While many grow to be secure adults, new research suggests that for some, it can take a serious, lasting toll.

Have you registered for our latest webinar presented by PLIDA's Education and DEI committees? The topic is: Improvement of Mental Health Symptoms Following a 6-week Virtual Support Group Program for Bereaved Parents Presented by Kiley Hanish, OTD, OTR/L and Betsy Winter Thursday, October 10, 2024 2PM - 3PM CST Cost: Members: $25 Non-Members: $35 After experiencing pregnancy or infant loss, bereaved birthing parents experience significantly higher levels of depression and are more likely to be diagnosed with other mental health conditions than those who give birth to infants who survive through the first year of age. Gold (2008) reports that perinatal loss resulted in a 4 times greater chance of screening positively for depression and a 7 times higher risk of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Moreover, many parents who experience pregnancy or infant loss are not screened or diagnosed and therefore do not receive treatment. RTZ HOPE created a 6-week, curriculum-based virtual support program for bereaved parents. Mental health assessments (PHQ-9 and GAD-7) were administered pre- and post-attendance of the 6-week virtual support group program, and this presentation reports on the effectiveness of these virtual support groups in reducing depression and anxiety post-perinatal loss. Feeling to grow up in the shadow of a lost sibling can be heart-wrenching 💔. Replacement Child Syndrome occurs when a child is born before the loss of a sibling is sufficiently mourned, and then can deeply affect their emotional well-being and family dynamics. Parents might unintentionally reject the "living" child, or, place high expectations on them to 'fill the void', leading to feelings of inadequacy and confusion 😔. Understanding this syndrome helps in providing the right support and nurturing environment. Let's create awareness and support those affected.
