Through Chapter One, a number of my Mishcon de Reya LLP colleagues and I are volunteering online for 30 minutes a week to help disadvantaged children improve their reading skills. In our #EmployeeSpotlight series, we're shining a light on the incredible individuals who help make a difference at Catholic Charities West Virginia. Today, get to know Desiree Gazdik, our Human Resources Manager, as she shares her passion for serving others and making a difference in our community. 1. What first brought you to Catholic Charities West Virginia? What keeps you there? -The opportunity to work somewhere I could be a part of making a difference and to be allowed to share openly my religious beliefs. I stay because I love my job and all the people I work with the help we are doing in the communities around West Virginia. 2. What is the most important thing you've learned in your time at Catholic Charities West Virginia? -We truly are a family-oriented agency. 3. What is your favorite part about working with Catholic Charities West Virginia? -All the people across the state I get to meet and interact with. 4. What are you most passionate about? -Making things simpler or better for others; it could be changing processes to make things run smoother with onboarding or hiring new employees to help maximize space in the office to make it athletically pleasing.

Working with non-profits for over 20 years, I've seen a lot of overhead. It's talented, dedicated staff who want to keep their jobs after their 8-month wage subsidies expire and who want to be fairly compensated for the important work they do. It's training programs that help them do their jobs more effectively (including the training that they get from me). It's insurance that safeguards the organization's financial health and protects the volunteer board of directors from financial ruin when they're making tough decisions. It's investment in policies, processes and technologies that help the organization run more efficiently, effectively, sustainably and transparently. The overhead makes the mission possible. So instead of asking "how low is your overhead?" we need to be asking "What impact are you making?" and "How many people are you reaching?" and "Tell us about the partnerships and relationships that you're building" and "How accountable are you to the communities you serve?" and "How satisfied are your staff?" Then we (as funders, donors and taxpayers) need to recognize the value of a well-run non-profit sector, and be willing to pay for it.

Charity truly does begin at home, as the saying goes. It serves as a reminder that if we cannot show love and care for our own family, how can we extend that love to others? It is a valuable lesson for all of us to remember that charity starts within the walls of our own homes. We must first learn to wholeheartedly care for and love our family before we can share that love with the outside world. It is our primary responsibility to prioritize serving our family before others, and to fulfill our duties towards them above all else. While some may argue that this means prioritizing our family's needs over those of others, others interpret this proverb as emphasizing the importance of teaching children about charity within the home. Children learn by example, so when parents demonstrate love, generosity, and a commitment to social causes, their children are likely to follow suit and contribute positively to society. By setting a positive example, parents can instill the value of giving back in their children, who will in turn pass on these teachings to future generations. On the other hand, if children witness their parents mistreating those in need, they are more likely to replicate that behavior. Therefore, it is crucial to teach our children the importance of kindness and generosity, as it can help build a more compassionate and supportive society. #CharityBeginsAtHome #FamilyFirst #SpreadLove #CompassionStartsAtHome #ActsOfKindness
