The 110-ton heavy tunnel boring machine, "Sigrid," has now commenced tunneling the final stretch of the Kalvebod Brygge Cloudburst Tunnel. At this very moment, it is chewing its way underground from Kalvebod Brygge towards Copenhagen. Sigrid is tasked with completing the 1.3-kilometer-long tunnel, a project decided upon by HOFOR – Greater Copenhagen Utility and Frederiksberg Forsyning A/S to protect Copenhagen from flooding during cloudbursts.   NIRAS is the consultant of the cloudburst tunnel, and throughout the project from 2017 to 2024, more than 300 employees across NIRAS's disciplines have been involved in the work.   According to Nikolaj Skytte, project manager at NIRAS, the cloudburst project is a complex infrastructure endeavor where timing, issues, and coordination must align seamlessly. However, with a competent and experienced international and Danish advisory team, the construction project stands out significantly.   "It was something special to see Sigrid being lowered into the shaft. Now you truly see the scale of the cloudburst tunnel, and it instills a certain humility. Many of us have worked hard to be ready for this day," says Nikolaj Skytte. He continues:   "The interdisciplinary aspect has been prevalent throughout the project, where expertise in environment, geotechnics, construction, infrastructure, water, and utilities has been involved. In the first half of 2024, the focus will be on construction, and after the summer, much of the installation work will begin. Did you know that for the 𝗠𝘀𝗶𝗸𝗮𝗯𝗮 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 the pylon inserts are used as the anchors from which the cables run as back-stays to the anchor blocks, and as fore-stays to the bridge deck? However, not all the inserts have to be in place before the launching of the deck can begin! Careful planning will allow the deck launching – itself a highly technical task – to commence after the first five inserts are installed, which is likely to be in the second half of 2024. We just successfully completed a challenging project, described below, while reaching over 1,000 days without a loss time incident. Reaching 1000 days of construction without a lost time incident is a significant milestone. It reflects a strong commitment to safety, rigorous adherence to protocols, and effective communication among the team. This achievement is a testament to the culture of safety that has been cultivated, where every worker understands their role in maintaining a safe environment. It’s a point of pride and a benchmark that sets the standard for future projects. However, it’s important to remember that safety is an ongoing process, and continuous efforts are needed to maintain this record. There were many challenges during the construction of a 7.7-mile transmission line, and the most notable was the Sullivan Sq. track crossing, which required the design and construction of two 45-foot-deep pits for tunnelling under railroad tracks. These pits were designed to house the tunnel boring machine capable of boring, in bedrock, twin 300’ long tunnels underneath seven railroad tracks owned and operated by the MBTA, Keolis, and Pan Am. The pits were constructed on either side of the railroad tracks and between the Elevated Expressway, Mystic Ave. Bridge, Maffa Way Bridge.
