Making life better by water!

About us

We're the charity who look after and bring to life 2,000 miles of waterways across England and Wales, because we believe that life is better by water. Our research findings are showing that spending time by water, whether it be your lunchbreak, daily commute or just a weekend stroll, really does make us feel happier and healthier. With ever increasing rates of obesity and stress and declining mental health in the UK, we believe we are uniquely placed to make a significant contribution to improving the wellbeing of millions of people. Many of the waterways we care for run through some of our country’s most deprived and multi-cultural urban communities where access to quality green space is scarce. That’s why, at Canal & River Trust, our passionate team are working with volunteers and communities across England and Wales to transform their canals and rivers into spaces where local people want to spend time and feel better. We know this will bring wellbeing opportunities to millions.

Due to legislation changes, increased costs running into millions mean the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal canal is at risk of running dry - we Canal & River Trust urgently need the governments help to keep it flowing. #keepcanalsalive #boating #sustainability #Future #canals #Wales

  • A huge THANK YOU to all our incredible volunteers who have been out and about making a difference on our waterways! 💙Here’s just a glimpse of what they’ve been up to: 🌿 Our Leicester South Towpath Taskforce rolled up their sleeves to improve the area around Blue Bank Lock 🚮 In Leigh, our amazing team cleared 40 bags of rubbish—including a discarded door—from the Leeds & Liverpool Canal! 🦺 At Fallings Lock in Wakefield, volunteers tackled BBQs, beer cans, fly-tipping, and even found a plastic wrapper from 2011! 🛒 Over at Tuel Lane Lock, our volunteers pulled out 2 shopping trolleys, 8 road signs, tins, bottles, and heaps of debris A massive welcome to everyone who has signed up to volunteer with us this year—we can’t wait to see what we’ll achieve together! 👏 There’s still time to join us and be part of the team! • From the famous Wedgwood to Middleport, the Trent & Mersey Canal aided the success of some of the most famous names in pottery 🏺 Josiah Wedgwood, world-renowned pottery manufacturer of the 1700s, needed a better way to get raw materials into his factories in and transport his delicate products out, so pushed for the construction of a canal through Stoke-on-Trent. Although many of the many potteries in the area are no longer working, the navigation is home to the last working Victorian pottery in Britain, Middleport Pottery, which still uses original machinery and is the only place in the world using a 200-year-old decorating technique. The industry’s heritage still lines the canal today, with red-brick buildings and tall stacks stretching up into the sky – we’d recommend visiting the stretch, by foot or by boat, to see it for yourself! 📍 Trent & Mersey Canal

  • We’re working to improve hedgerows running along the Montgomery Canal 🌱 Our wonderful volunteers have been hedge laying along the towpath between Welshpool and Newtown, planting new sections of hedge where there are currently gaps to form an unbroken linear habitat, providing food and shelter for insects, birds and mammals. Thanks to support from the Local Places for Nature Fund, this project aims to restore and enhance nature on people's doorsteps 🏡

  • We've been carrying out vital conservation work on Caen Hill Lock Flight, the Scheduled Ancient Monument of the Kennet & Avon Canal 🙌 Water was drained from the locks so repairs could be carried out by our specialist teams 🧰 Did you step inside the historic brick chamber at our recent open day?

  • This #InternationalWomensDay, we’d like to celebrate the huge contribution women past and present have made to our waterways. From the Idle Women who volunteered on the canals during World War Two to those working with us and for us today, we can’t thank them enough. Here’s to our hard-working and successful female colleagues and volunteers, who are not only brilliant at what they do, but inspire the next generation of young women 🎉
