A green, competitive, and affordable mobility ecosystem in Europe will in large part depend on adequate access to in-vehicle data within the aftermarket value chain, including the independent automotive repair and service market. This was the core message at CLEPA’s Aftermarket Conference, held last month in Brussels, which gathers key industry stakeholders to discuss market outlook and latest aftermarket solutions. In a high-paced sector where technologies such as artificial intelligence and connectivity continue to open new opportunities for business practices, EU regulation must ensure a level-playing field that allows automotive market actors to adapt and help create the innovative and consumer-oriented space needed for future mobility. Europe’s automotive industry is facing growing challenges including job loss and a shift in investments away from the EU supply industry. The right market incentives are needed now to boost the global competitiveness of our industry. Read my latest editorial here

"The automotive industry is both the pride and the problem child of Europe." So said the "Tagesschau" news program in its introduction to an article on yesterday’s "strategic dialogue" between EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and the automotive industry. This dual reality defines the sector: while electrification, decarbonization, and digitalization are driving innovation, rising costs, supply chain disruptions, and global competition threaten Europe's position. The challenge is to act fast: The EU Commission’s Compass for Competitiveness is a step in the right direction, but securing the future of mobility requires both cutting-edge innovation and a regulatory framework that drives industry-wide growth, job creation, and global competitiveness. A key focus must be on strengthening infrastructure and energy solutions, particularly in charging and hydrogen networks. 75% of a vehicle's value is created in the supply chain – at BENTELER Group, we are committed to keeping this value strong in Europe. As a global company with deep European roots, we combine local expertise with an international perspective to support manufacturers worldwide. We help them save time, optimize resources, and drive the transformation of mobility. Europe is the heart of the industry, but the race to compete is global. Let's move forward – together!
