This week’s #AlumniThenAndNow, we are highlighting Nogosa Atekha a graduate from the Berkshire School’s class of 2021! Currently, Nogosa is an intern at William Blair! 💙What was DMSF’s impact on you? 💛 Receiving the DMSF scholarship changed my life in ways I can't even describe. The overall knowledge from experiencing an entirely different racial environment, and socioeconomic environment was extremely insightful. The opportunity to live on my own was beneficial, and the opportunity to play competitive sports in a prep league was also beneficial, as I am now an NCAA collegiate Track & Field athlete. The skills I learned in the summer bridge program for overall interaction with adults and sending emails are skills I still use to this day. The biggest benefit from the DMSF scholarship has been the alumni network with networking and connection opportunities. DMSF does a great job with putting alums in good networking environments, as Mr. Nick Cross provides us with webinars for internship opportunities at firms with strong DMSF representation. Finally, DMSF has a multitude of resources if needed in order to improve your overall health and happiness. 💙For you, what does it mean to be a Murphy Scholar? 💛Being a Murphy Scholar means to not only be a leader, but to be an academic weapon and to build good connections with those within and outside of your comfort zones. 💙What advice do you have for current Murphy Scholars? 💛 I would advise to connect with people outside of your comfort zone more. Networking and connections hold more weight than I had ever thought. I am looking forward to speaking to the students at University of Memphis today! I am going to share with them how I paid off $50,000 of debt in two years! According to the May 2024 Strada Education Foundation's Building Better Internships report: "financial challenges also impeded students from participating in internships. About one-third of 4-year internships were unpaid, and even paid internships sometimes require students to forgo wages or pay for additional transportation and/or housing." #students shouldn't miss out on critical #experientiallearning opportunities simply because their pay or stipend does not cover housing costs during the experience. Some universities now offer internship scholarships for students with unpaid or low-pay internships. But these resources are often limited and quickly dispensed. However, there are other resources including the HBCU National Center Housing Grant which provides 💎free housing💎 to #hbcu students who have secured an internship in the Washington, D.C. area. We believe it’s important to discuss how and if you want to contribute to your kid’s college fund. There are a lot of creative ways to approach this. 🤜You could pay a portion of their education. 🤜You could require that they apply for a certain amount of scholarships each semester. 🤜You could purchase a rental property for your child to live in for free while in college and have them manage renting out the extra rooms. 🤜They could take as many college classes as possible in high school. Many high schoolers now graduate with an associate’s degree. 🤜Look into community colleges, state schools, trade schools, internships. What creative approaches have you tried or are planning on trying to keep college costs low?

BYU Pre-Business Students For those of you that did not get accepted into the program that you applied for: It’s okay! Rejection is redirection (credit Jonathan Javier💡) I applied to three BYU Marriott school programs when I was at the Y. I was waitlisted for two, but ultimately denied by all three programs. Then… I moved across the country to study Sport Management at North Carolina State University. Being in North Carolina led directly to the opportunity to work for TeamWork Online! The plan we have for ourselves often does not work out the way we thought it would. More important than your major, internships determine your job placement, post-graduation. Adapt to the changes and know that if you keep working, it’s all going to work out eventually. What internships are you looking for? P.S. Did you end up working in the same field as your degree? Do you know how many companies offer you internships right in your first year? Right in your second year? Do you know how many scholarships a student can avail of during their college time? How many schemes students can avail of? Do you know how many companies offer paid apprenticeships for students? It’s quite common among students to just listen to what faculty says, what placements the college brings, what hackathons the college hosts, and nothing beyond that. Just a casual surf on the internet would land you on multiple opportunities. In fact, it’s sometimes quite difficult to choose one among them because of the abundant options out there. As a student, we are programmed not to think outside of the college, explore outside, and take part in outside college events unless told to do so. This post is about thinking beyond college, not listening to what is just being said, not doing what is being told in college but beyond that. It’s about knowing the opportunities, finding the opportunities, and making the best out of them. As a student, don’t make the same mistake. Break the glass wall around you and start coming out. And they don’t expect this from students and we are going to prove it wrong! Small steps -> Big impact!
