Every year, the Flight Centre Foundation donates to 5 deserving charities through our ‘Giving Grants’ program. These charities are voted for by our people, hand selected from a long list of many other deserving applicants. As each of our Giving Grants winners are doing incredible work, we want to spotlight each of them over the next few weeks to raise awareness on how they’re making an incredible change to people’s lives and within our community.  Today, we're putting the spotlight on Southern Cross Kids' Camps.  ❤ Who? Southern Cross Kids' Camps ❤ What? This wonderful organisation runs 5-day camps every year, specifically designed to interrupt the trauma-abuse-neglect cycle that can occur within primary school aged children. These camps create a safe space where children can foster hope again, as well as meet new friends and make positive memories they can reflect on for years to come.  ❤ When? Southern Cross Kids Camps happen once a year and they go for a duration of 5 days. Against a tough economic climate, we supported families with over 84,000 essential grants (more than the number of seats at Twickenham Stadium). We also provided families raising disabled and seriously ill children with 69,000 instances of information and support (that’s as many beats as your heart will make today). “Life can be quite tough generally, but especially now with the cost-of-living crisis. Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities help children overcome barriers to sport and play. If you support young people, check out their Community Development Grants. This funding opportunity has two streams to help organizations who provide programming for kids between the ages of 4-18 in financial need or youth with disabilities between the ages of 4-25. Operational support: - To help organizations build their capacity to provide more inclusive, equitable, safe sport participant experiences. Programming support: - To assist organizations in developing or sustaining the delivery of sport or physical activity-based programs. Approved funding will be disbursed in two intervals: 70% upon acceptance and 30% upon completion of mandatory training requirements, and reporting.  Applications close soon on 12 July at 11:59 am EST, so don't miss out! Ways to Be a Light: Get Kids Involved Looking for ways to get your kids more involved? Here are some ideas for age-appropriate #projects that would help others, build “team spirit”, and teach valuable lessons. It is a great #family, team, or classroom project! Consider for: senior class projects, Brighter Futures hours, Kiwanis or Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts projects, family reunions, youth sports teams. 1.     Clothing #donation drives – Collect clothes they can’t fit anymore to give to kids at family shelters. Setup donation drives at kids’ games and events for parents to drop off. Organizations such as Metropolitan Ministries operate family shelters. Contact a family shelter to coordinate donations for their residents. 2.     BOGO (Buy One, Give One) school supplies drive – Raise money to purchase school supplies for kids in need. Kids receive school supply lists every year. Use the list to get a matching set of each item to donate to a child whose family is unable to afford supplies. 3.     Food pantries – Some food pantries offer hours and volunteering opportunities for youths. They need younger people to help with things like warehousing tasks, food preparation, donation processing. Check sites such as VolunteerMatch.org for postings from local food pantries that allow kids to volunteer. Reforms to the early years sector, the impact of financial challenges on charities and children’s home closures are among the key issues which piqued the interest of CYP Now’s readers in 2023.

Home-Start Hillingdon supports families as they navigate the challenges of parenthood including isolation, post-natal depression, relationship problems, or the emotional and practical demands of young children. A team of 40 trained parent volunteers work with 120 families a year. They visit families for 2-3 hours a week to offer bespoke support, befriending and practical advice. 93% of families felt better able to cope after receiving help. Demand is increasing, but changes in Government funding means the future of HSH is extremely uncertain. Aware of the difficulties that lie ahead, HSH has successfully piloted a number of corporate and community fundraising initiatives. Access to resources offered at Catholic Charities Northside Child Development Center and at V3 Sports is particularly important in North Minneapolis, because young adults under 18 make up roughly 40% of the population in the Near North neighborhood. Our children's futures will rely on the work we do today — Near North's unemployment rate is twice that of the rest of the city, and many organizations are working to promote economic stability, job opportunities, and education equity.
