Join SOSV next week (April 24, 7:00 a.m. PT - Virtual | Live | Free) for "How should we measure and attribute climate impact?", led by Pale blue dot's Hampus Jakobsson and joined by Norrsken VC's Agnes Svensson, Planet A Ventures' Jessica Burley, AENU's Elena Harumi Stark, and Worldfund's Morgan Sheil. Register below. Everyone wants to know the likely climate impact for any given climate tech startup, and the answers vary hugely depending on the category (ag, transport, materials, etc.) as well as the technology and, of course, eventual market adoption. How strict should we be when measure “impact?” https://lnkd.in/gfs3PKnv

The Dutch saying is: ‘Grote stappen snel thuis’. Translation: Big steps will get you to your destination quickly. I am privileged to be an advisor of these two guys. Their startup Hydryx is developing a software/hardware soluton to optimize methane capture from landfills. Even in the comparatively well organized Dutch waste management ecosystem, the old landfills, long closed, are still emitting significant amounts of the very potent greenhouse gas methane. This methane is supposed to be run through a generator where it can be converted into energy and the less potent CO2. But in most cases the methane isn’t fully captured and the generator is idle for more than 50% of the time. Hydryx is looking to significantly mitigate that problem by implementing an ingenious system of sensors, actuators and big data software. There is significant interest from waste management companies in the Netherlands in what this young team of mathematicians, engineers, and analysts are up to. Taking their solution to other European countries where landfills contain more foodwaste (and hence emit even more methane) would be the next logical step. And taking it to open landfills in developing countries is the holy grail. The amount of greenhouse gas avoided per dollar invested appears to be staggering. I am particularly interested because I have long held the view that eliminating greenhouse gas emissions from waste management (about 4% of the global total) is the lowest hanging fruit. If you use it for energy generation it actually has a very positive business case, irrespective of greenhouse gas credits. The early signs are promising, this is a really talented team and they deserved to win this recognition. They are taking the big steps that will get us expediently closer to our destination of zero emissions.
🎉 Yesterday was an incredible day! Hydryx proudly won the Climate Tech Summit Benelux in the Carbon Solutions category! 🚀🌍 The expert jury's decision in our favour was based on the scale of the problem we are tackling, the impact we can have and the scalability of our low-cost solution. It’s amazing to see our efforts already being recognised at this level. It was a fantastic opportunity to meet with investors and mission-driven entrepreneurs, all working towards a sustainable future 🌱 Big congratulations to the other amazing winners: Carbon Equity, Mosa Meat, Maeve , iwell & BlueAlp. Onwards and upwards! 🙌✨ Thanks for hosting such an impactful event Leopold, Gideon, Paulina, Edwin & Harm. Looking forward to the next edition!

In a recent interview with El Viento Digital, Angelo Sartori, director, regional engagement, explained that Verra is a nonprofit organization that helps drive finance to projects that have environmental and social impacts. He particularly focused on Verra's Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program, in which a number of forestry and land use projects are registered. Angelo emphasized that Verra is committed to advancing climate action and sustainable development through its standards programs. He also highlighted the signing of the MOU with the government of Bolivia, specifically with the Plurinational Authority of Mother Earth (APMT). Under this MOU, Verra will hold trainings for local stakeholders who are developing projects in the VCS Program or are planning on doing so. Angelo thinks that REDD and Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation (ARR) projects, in particular, have a lot of potential in forest-rich Bolivia. Neighboring countries with similar ecosystems, such as Brazil and Peru, include a large number of VCS projects that have benefited the rural and/or indigenous communities in the region. Pano AI has been recognised as one of the top climate tech companies by investors for our impact on reducing carbon emissions. Early detection means fewer large bushfires. And fewer large bushfires means less CO2 released into the atmosphere, which is a significant driver of Climate Change. #technology #climatechange #innovation #CO2
I'm excited to share that Pano AI has been named to the 50 by 2050 list, highlighting climate tech companies making a meaningful impact on reducing carbon emissions. Thank you to Congruent Ventures and Silicon Valley Bank for this recognition! It’s inspiring to see so many innovative companies working towards a more sustainable future. Proud of the entire Pano team for their dedication and look forward to continuing this important work. ▶️ https://ow.ly/5mAQ50TlmHM Marianne Wu Joshua Posamentier Abe Yokell

#thoughtfortheday: As Milton barrels towards Florida, floods rage in eastern europe, while droughts and fires proliferate elsewhere, I can't help but think about the future of - food. I'll be at Slush in Helsinki in a few weeks' time, which is focusing very much on startups in the cleantech and eco-tech space. Of all the things we can focus our collective efforts on - fighting climate change + finding ways to cope with our increasingly volatile world really should be a top priority. Very much looking forward to seeing what the next batch of companies are working on.
