The Institute for Pan-African Thought and Conversation (IPATC) at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and TrustAfrica are jointly organizing the 2nd African Union Studies Annual Symposium on the theme: "Inclusive Development and the Future of Democracy in Africa: The Role of the AU and the RECs". The symposium aims to critically assess the state of democracy in Africa, identify obstacles to democratic consolidation, and share best practices for strengthening democratic governance. It will also highlight the importance of inclusive policies and practices, discuss strategies for reducing inequalities, and promote social inclusion as a cornerstone of sustainable development. Key themes and topics for the symposium include: - Rethinking Democracy in Africa: Theories and Practice - Democratic Governance and Consolidation - Indigenisation of Democracy and Economic Frameworks in Africa - Strengthening Democratic Institutions Beyond the State - Democracy and Leadership Questions/Unconstitutional Governments - Electoral Processes and Integrity - Inclusive Development and Social Equity - Women, Youth, and Inclusive Development and Sustainable Democracy - AU, RECs, NEPAD-AUDA, and APRM: Democracy Promotion and Facilitation of Inclusive Development The symposium will be held in Gauteng, South Africa, from 4-6 November 2024. The SIVIO Institute peer-reviewed journal called the African Journal of Inclusive Societies (AJIS) is making preparations for its 4th Volume. We are excited to make the call for submissions to African researchers, activists, development practitioners, and academics with unique insights on inclusion and exclusion in Africa. This volume will focus on inclusion in both common and uncommon spaces to understand the progress the continent has made to date and the progress yet to be made. The title of the 4th volume is “Africa’s Quest for Inclusion: Trend and Patterns”. We are specifically making a call for abstracts analyzing the inclusion/exclusion status of the following:  Markets: Land, housing, labour, and credit. Services: Social welfare, electricity, information, transport, education, water and health. Spaces: Political, social, physical, and cultural spaces. Our aim is to understand the shape and form inclusion has taken in Africa and to determine where Africa is falling short. These resources are quite helpful for keeping up with the most recent advancements and advances in the industry. In the area of evidence-based decision making, Tai's reputation and credibility can be improved by joining a respectable network such as AEN. Because the network focuses on tackling possibilities and challenges unique to each African region, Tai's involvement in solving issues relevant to the continent is both significant and timely. Excited to share our recent involvement at the CODESRIA General Assemblies in Dakar, Senegal, focusing on "Social Sciences and Pandemics in Africa". Our scientific paper, "Herd Behavior on the Moroccan Stock Market: An Empirical Analysis in a Health Crisis Context," was part of this insightful event. In partnership with the Hanns Seidel Foundation, the African Futures and Innovation (AFI) programme at the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) organised a series of events from May 22 to 25, 2024, in Kinshasa, DRC, where I presented the results and conclusions of our study on the long-term development prospects for the DRC. I had constructive discussions with various stakeholders, including representatives of the government, policymakers, international organizations, civil society, women leaders, academia and the private sector on strategies to accelerate inclusive growth and development in the DRC. Despite its vast natural resources, the DRC remains behind in many development indicators, with its current GDP per capita lower than when it gained independence in 1960. On its current development trajectory, the country risks having the second-highest number of poor people globally by 2050, second only to Nigeria. The study identifies the socio-economic challenges and opportunities of the DRC and proposes various scenarios to guide the country towards a more prosperous and stable future.
