Our analysis and thoughts on Nokia purchasing Infinera. Overall, the combination creates a company with an enviable balance among regions, deriving roughly a third of its sales from the US, a third from EMEA, and 25% from APAC, providing a buffer from regional geopolitical and economic instability. In place of two companies with regional market shares of 10-20%, the new Nokia should end up holding a third of the market in all major regions except Japan and China. The boost in market presence should give Nokia the scale it needs to maintain and grow its recent profitability, and to effectively compete with Ciena in North America and Huawei in the rest of the world. Optical transport might even become a market that begins to resemble that of routing, with fewer competitors, higher margins, and greater interoperability.
