It’s been great to be a part of this group, aligning with so much of what I have been reframing in urban education, practice and governance for the past 10+ years. We know these words are temporary markers that will require continual evolution as they are tested in a variety of contexts around the world - just consider for a moment the difference in meaning and weight when directing change in a 200 year old residential suburb compared to a 200 day informal setttlement. There is much still to do, but convening diverse voices, collaborating across academia, industry, governence and citizen, connecting with available data and creating new sources - this is the sort of activity and commitment we need to progress human centred change. "Thing 1" of three new things --- I'm heading to #Morocco to be a plenary speaker and attend the first biennial Africa #SmartCity Forum. Did you know that #UrbanGrowth in Africa is the highest on the planet, 10X faster than in Europe and even 2X faster than India and China! The #UrbanTransition in Africa is, therefore, fascinating, and I'm very excited to participate and learn at the Africa Smart City Forum in Benguerir. The objective of the event is: "to convene stakeholders from various sectors including #UrbanPlanning, urban heritage, cultural and social #resilience, environmental #sustainability, social entrepreneurship, technological and spatial #innovation, urban governance, education, #health, and well-being." The call to action is expressed as: "African cities must, therefore, change the #paradigm of conventional urbanism by adopting smart #urbanism, centered around both low and high technology, tailored to the specificities of the African territory." I look forward to sharing more about what I learn from an African context and connecting with those giving #urban leadership on a continent I've yet to visit. This is, yes, the "Thing 1" of three new things.
