Great news from the "catch4climate" research and development project! Another important milestone has been reached with the installation of the six oxygen tanks for the oxyfuel plant. The oxyfuel furnace system is expected to be commissioned in the first quarter of 2025. The project of the research and development company CI4C is a joint venture of the four European cement manufacturers Buzzi SpA - Dyckerhoff GmbH, Heidelberg Materials AG, SCHWENK Zement GmbH und Co KG and Vicat S.A. The oxygen tanks were supplied by Westfalen AG and offer a total storage capacity of around 360 cubic meters of liquid oxygen for the operation of the Pure Oxyfuel plant. The aim of the project is to capture CO₂ emissions from a cement plant efficiently and effectively and to create the conditions for large-scale use of CO₂ capture technologies in the cement industry. As I delve deeper into the realm of Brine Concentration, Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD), and Brine Valorization projects, I find myself questioning the necessity of Nanofiltration (NF) as a precursor to the Desalination/Concentration process. From my perspective, Softening emerges as a pivotal initial step, crucial for mitigating scaling potential in brines and facilitating subsequent concentration processes. Consequently, the need for an extensive NF system upstream, often at 120% of the Desalination system's capacity, seems redundant. By adopting a Desalination-Softening-Concentration approach, we can strategically address scaling concerns and tailor our processes to specific product requirements. This enables us to efficiently use NF downstream to manage Monovalent (MV) and Polyvalent (PV) ions, allowing for diverse applications based on product needs. For instance, a mixed salt solution can seamlessly transition to fractional crystallization, while a purified PV stream can be directed towards high-purity Mg production.
