Our latest laboratory experiment provided valuable insights into the industrial distillation process for methanol (MeOH) concentration. This system leverages the principle of relative volatility to separate components based on their boiling points, allowing selective evaporation of the more volatile components while facilitating partial evaporation of all substances. Initially, we operated the unit with a high feed flow rate under total reflux, without product withdrawal. This configuration enabled us to closely observe the fundamental operations of the distillation system without encountering challenges like low flow rates or product management. In a subsequent test, we introduced product removal at both the top and bottom while maintaining a high feed rate. Although pump handling remained straightforward, this setup exposed material balance challenges. We achieved 88% methanol purity, highlighting the complexities involved in real-world distillation. This hands-on experience significantly deepened our understanding of distillation dynamics and their role in methanol production, equipping us for future industry-related challenges. #Methanoldistillation #Processengineering #Distillation

Injecting a polymeric surfactant and aninert gas into the water producing zone reduces the water permeability of a water-producing zone. There are a number of studies of the physical gels, which are formed by polymer-surfactant interactions. The gelation and viscoelastic behavior results from specific interactions between thepolymer chains and the micelles formed from assembled surfactant monomers.
