"There is no human experience that is not in some sense cultural." "There is no mental illness without a cultural dimension to it." These two statements made me want to interview Dr. Laurence Kirmayer, one of our nation's leading experts on the intersections of mental health and culture. Join us tomorrow to hear him share more about these two statements (& more!) - especially as they impact workplaces. The recording will be available if you can't make it but want to hear what he shares. https://lnkd.in/eU4qrJJR #mentalhealth #hr #peopleandculture #equitydiversityinclusion #psychologicalsafety #thoughtleadership

Mental health and healing is the domain of all of us—not just mental health professionals. 💬 The mental health discourse often centers on clinical services like therapy and psychiatry only. But do you agree? 👉 Expanding access to clinical services alone cannot meet the full needs of our times. Growing evidence shows that community support can have a similarly powerful impact 🚀 – especially when considering the interconnection of mental health with systems of oppression and injustice. "If mental health ultimately allows us to navigate life’s difficulties toward a sense of growth and contribution, then it is critical to social change, which exists at the intersection of our collective pain and our collective freedom." To truly prioritize our collective well-being, we believe in a holistic approach that weaves mental health into the very fabric of our social change world. This integration is not only crucial for fostering workplace cultures that uplift rather than harm, but also plays a key role in enhancing the sustainability of our collective efforts. In this Stanford Social Innovation Review article 👇, our co-founder, Daisy Rosales, and Kelly Davis from Mental Health America explore 4 pathways to cultivating mental health in social change. Check out the article in the comments below. The mental health conversation hasn't gone too far, but has it become too narrow? This #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek, our researchers Annie Irvine and Cassandra Lovelock share evidence from ongoing research that highlights the need for a more holistic approach to understanding and assessing work capability in the UK. Read more: Recent months have seen a series of policy statements highlighting the problem of economic inactivity due to long-term ill health, among which mental health problems make up a high proportion. These ministerial speeches have included accusations that we have a ‘sick note culture’, that people are having overexaggerated responses to the ‘everyday challenges and worries of life’, and suggestions that people with common mental health problems of anxiety and depression do not need the levels of benefit support currently being made available. At the ESRC Centre for Society and Mental Health, we are carrying out qualitative research investigating the ways in which people’s lived experience of distress shapes their interactions with work and the welfare system. This includes secondary analysis of archived research data, and new qualitative longitudinal research which is taking an in-depth lifecourse perspective on the interplay of work, welfare and mental health. Editorial: Break the mental health stigma: mental health in the workplace Addressing this stigma warrants a comprehensive approach that encompasses a nuanced understanding of workplace dynamics, societal awareness, supportive leadership, as well as new assessment tools and innovative interventions. By integrating this knowledge into practical and actionable strategies, organizations can pave the way towards creating inclusive and supportive work environments that also care for the mental health of their employee. Breaking the Barriers of Mental Health Stigma and Discrimination Living with conditions like schizophrenia or depression is challenging, but the stigma and discrimination faced can be even more daunting. Charlene Sunkel founder of the Global Mental Health Peer Network, highlights the harsh reality: "People react with fear and prejudice, assuming we are dangerous or incapable." Stigma goes beyond attitudes—it leads to discriminatory behaviors, affecting access to care and quality of life. Sir Graham Thornicroft, Professor of Community Psychiatry at King’s College London, illustrates this with "diagnostic overshadowing," where physical symptoms are dismissed due to a mental health diagnosis. Stigma is a major barrier to thriving. Negative perceptions and misinformation can lead to both public and structural discrimination. Internalized stigma, or self-stigma, further hampers individuals' confidence and opportunities. The Lancet Commission on Ending Stigma and Discrimination in Mental Health emphasizes social contact as the most effective way to reduce stigma. Real-life interactions and sharing experiences can transform attitudes and behaviors, promoting understanding and empathy. Inclusion and social contact are key to breaking down stigma and empowering those with mental health conditions. #MentalHealth #EndStigma #Inclusion #Empathy #MentalHealthAwareness https://lnkd.in/gMaPmByu
