As Australia celebrates NAIDOC week this week, it is worth appreciating the rich history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and also an opportunity to learn about one of the oldest continuous living cultures on Earth 🌍. 💎 New Governance Requirements for Indigenous Data: Recently, Australian Public Service agencies adopted the Framework for Governance of Indigenous Data. Co-designed with Indigenous partners, this framework ensures better access to government-held Indigenous data for First Nations Australians. It emphasizes collaboration, capability-building, and an inclusive data system. 💎 These governance requirements aim to contribute directly to ‘closing the gap’ by enhancing data accessibility, quality management and ethical use of indigenous data, and promoting inclusivity via ensured respectful collaboration and decision making for uplifting these communities. It’s NAIDOC Week 2024 and the theme this year is ‘Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, loud and proud’. NAIDOC Week is held each year, honouring the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This week offers all Australians the chance to learn about First Nations cultures and histories, and to join in celebrating the oldest, continuous living culture in the world. The theme for this year's NAIDOC week honours the resilient spirit of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, calling on us to stand in solidarity and amplify the voices that have long been silenced. It's NAIDOC Week 2024! And proud Samuawgadhalgal, Torres Strait artist Deb Belyea is the winner of this year's NAIDOC Week poster competition – here is what Deb says of the winning work, Urapun Muy. “‘Urapun Muy’, from the Kalaw Kawaw Ya dialect of the Top Western Islands of the Torres Strait, means ‘One Fire’. The title of this work pays homage to Torres Strait Islanders and Aboriginal people everywhere, as we all have that one fire; our passion for our culture.   In this work, I have depicted the hands of our ancestors that have carefully dropped a burning ember on to a fire. This ember burns hot with intensity, stoking the flames, as it combines with the new fire. The linear detail shows the energy and power as cultural knowledge is transferred from our ancestors to us today. Culture is the fire that gives us knowledge, wisdom and purpose. It is our responsibility to maintain, practice, and pass on our fire to our future generations. After all, Culture keeps us Blak, Loud and Proud.”   At #AscottAustralia, we are committed to listening more, learning more, and forming more partnerships that will support First Nations communities in meaningful ways.
