What inspires you to give to a charity? Sometimes I give out of a sense of duty and to honour those I love. I also give out of joy—to celebrate an occasion and to express gratitude for the many good things that are in my life. Recently, after moving our family to a new city, I began donating to local charities as a way to get to know my community and to start new connections in the place I’d chosen to make my home. The majority of my philanthropy is done with intention.  This week’s lead article in Hilborn Charity eNews may be longer than you’re used to, but let me tell you – the information that Steven Ayer is sharing is worth every single one of the 1,300 words he wrote. For some time, we’ve been hearing that the number of Canadians making charitable donations is declining. In his article, Steve explores why this is happening and what we can do to course-correct. And here’s a spoiler: it has to do with us spending more time alone and less time with friends. So, I ask you —do you know your neighbours? Are you participating in group activities? Do you prioritize conversations with friends over time scrolling on your phone? For it is clear that our charitable actions are rooted in the connections we foster in our lives. Why does Canada have fewer charitable donors now than in 1997 despite the population growing by around 10 million? See my attempt at answering this via a "short-form post" described as "[maybe] longer than you're used to" and [at least] "worth every single word one of the 1300 words" by the editor. Read the article to learn why this is happening (our increasing disconnection among other things), how much it costs charities in lost donations (easily $3 billion per year in Canada alone) and where we go from here (hopefully somewhere different). One of the most concerning trends is the accelerating decline in our donation rate, first over the 2010s and then worsening over the pandemic. The longer this decline goes on without real and significant strategies to reverse this pattern, the weaker our social systems become. And our increased reliance on ultra-wealthy donors will have profound impacts on the types of organizations that receive support. Section 80G of the Income Tax Act offers a significant incentive for those making voluntary donations to specified funds or institutions. Under the Share and Care Program of Veena Gusain Memorial Foundation, a short summary is provided for the benefit of donors and NGOs. Donors can claim tax benefits, with deductions ranging from 50% to 100% of the donated amount.
